Two remapped jewel – Rude Skov & Geel Skov

My two home forests, just a short jog from my place have been remapped. I had the pleasure running on the Geel Skov map a couple of weeks a go, in relay training with some mates. Unfortunately I was still hit by a cold so only jogged, but it didn’t make the experience worse! We even entered an area which hasn’t been mapped before.

I should get even better when I ‘ran’ a middle distance competition today in Rude Skov. Just looking at the map it’s just making me wont to run! a total different story compared to the old map and what a pleasure! Enjoyed the entire 49 mns even though I’m still not 100% over my cold and just jogged around.

A big thanks from here to Troels Christiansen who have managed to supervise the Ukrainian map makers, and create an awesome output!

Now I just want to get out and train on the new great maps...

Midgaardsormen:
A 9 leg relay the Danish equivalent of Tiomila and Jukola… though only with 38 teams at the start line. My club Tisvilde looked really good on the paper. We had a late injury but as the same happened for our worst competitor Faaborg it looked to be a good fight for the money. Faaborg lunched the Gold from the start With Mikkel and Tue on the night legs, instead we had the strongest runners in the end. The result was that Faaborg was in the lead with 8-12 mns on the first 6 legs. A great run on 7’th leg and we were back in action and the game was even. 8’th leg didn’t change that and I started 8 sec behind Faaborg on last leg. I had a short split at 1’st and 3’rd control and got a gap. Lucky me the legs felt better than yesterday, without feeling great. I guess it help to get them fired up so the got used to having a hard time. Managed to give us a 2½ mns win. It’s always great to win a relay and it feels good to be able to give something back to the club, as thanks for their support.

28-08-2010 Danish Middle distance champs – Sukkertoppen
It’s not always a pleasure to run in a new area not mapped before in Denmark, but Sukkertoppen was actually a real pleasure, except for the 525m climb on a 6.3k course.

I was really unsure about the shape due to no high intensity training for 3 weeks. The plan was to go easy from the start, which I felt I did. Anyway I was fastest to the second control… hmm… Wasn’t consequent enough in on the way to 3’rd control and ran too long in the terrain until I hit the road which added up to almost 1 mns. Misjudged how close to the top 5’th control were and went too far down the hill and lost 35 sec. Started to struggle with the pace from here and lost the focus on the navigation. Lost time on the route to 10’th (a route right from the line was significant faster) stuffed #12 and #17 with more than one minute. So have to be happy with being 4 mns behind, with more than 3½ mns of mistakes and concrete in the legs.

Mountain race, Stupidity and 5000m

After 2 days of guiding cars at Norway Cup (The largest soccer tournament for youngsters in Scandinavia), with a lot of dust and sun, rumours were about a short mountain race in Normarka.

The race was a bit harder than I expected, and I’m happy I asked Mikkel for help regarding shoe selection, as my flat runner would have been hopeless. Managed a second place on a route there suited orienteers well. The back side was that I got attack by wasps which resulted in swollen calves.

I did intervals the following day and got a cold, not to server. Got persuaded to do the Danish 5000m Champs.

Danish 5000m Champs – Odense
While the WOC Sprint Champs was on the program in Trondheim, I had other plans. It just felt stupid to follow a competition which are suppose to be for the best runners in the world, when you know that you have a better level than the runners your nation have entered for the competition. Hence the plan was a new PB on 5000m, and a time around 15:10. Nothing went according to the plan, I got some cold symptoms Saturday evening and when I woke up with a blocked nose and a soar head, it didn’t look good at all. As I have agreed to drive I took the trip to Odense. The legs didn’t feel to bad at the warm-up and the headache was almost gone after a lot of fluid.

The race didn’t go as I had expected. The speed was too low in the beginning which actually gave me the feeling that the legs were fine. But after the first two K’s in 3:08 and 3:11 I decided to take the lead and increase the pace. The legs started to struggle as the pace increased though I didn’t manage to due some decent splits and ended with 3:05, 3:05 and 3:00 = 15:31

So all in all I got a bad time, a decent cold, and a few days without training ahead, before I start to prepare for the Danish Champs, which before the season started only was my 3’rd priority, but the Danish National team management and selectors changed that.

O-Ringen Örebro
As WOC in Trondheim, which has been my main goal for the season, to my big surprise was not relevant for me; I had to come up with something different. A week before O-Ringen I decided to enter the races. My plan was to perform well on first stage - ‘Long’ distance (75 mns winning time) and the sprint on stage 3. The preparation since the selection races has not been WOC like but still decent.

Stage 1: The races didn’t go as planned. After a wobbly start on stage one I sprained my ankle at 4’th control, as I jumped down a 1½m cliff and landed badly on my right foot. As the rules stated that any runner not finishing one stage was not qualified to start on the following stages, the decision was easy. I continued on in an easier pace and with focus on not making more damage. Except for a 1½ mns mistake at 11’Th and 3mns at 14 I did reasonable, but the pace was too low.

Stage 2: (Middle distance) the plan was just to ‘survive’ by taking care where I placed my feet and instead focus on the navigation instead of trying to keep a good pace. Even after half a roll of sports tape secured around my right ankle and a couple of pain killers, the plan didn’t work for long and a mistake at 5’Th control was the start of a bad race. The lesson learned, which was similar to my experience from the middle WOC selection trial, was that I’m not focused enough if the plan is not run in normal race speed, and I do too many mistakes navigation wise.

Stage 3: (Sprint) The race I have look forward to and with the ankle getting better I believed I could do a good race. A lot of sports tape and some pain killers were on the menu again before the race. The ankle felt better and I didn’t have much trouble with it on the hard ground and even surface, compared to the rocky ground on stage one and two.

The tactic was to have a plan before I started any leg, and push the pace on the long legs. I got an early time loss going to second control. I almost crashed with a female runner at a narrow passage and my mind shifted to third control and I ran 5m up the wrong ally before I noticed the error and 10 sec was lost. I kept a good pace over the next section of the course, but had to see another 10 sec lost at 7’Th as I didn’t see the control behind the hedge the first time and ran half way up the stairs before I saw the control and had to go back down. A bad route to 9’Th added up to another 5 sec, I simply didn’t see the right alternative. The biggest time loss though was on the long leg to 13’Th where I was 16 sec of the pace. The right option going backward out of 12’Th was too long compared to the only slightly longer distance from the line going left along the river.

Even with 3 errors and a bad route choice I still ended 15’Th which is not too bad the field in mind, but I can’t be happy with my race due to the errors I made.

Stage 4: (longish middle 45 mns winning time) The terrain was supposed to be more run able, and the map samples looked great. From the lesson learned on third stage the plan was to go competition speed, and let the ground slow me down where it was too rocky for my soar ankle. After some hesitation and challenge by the rocky ground for the first couple of controls I settled into a good flow and my biggest mistakes were at the easy control 13 and 14. I didn’t quite manage to read the green boundaries going into 23 and I had to go to the road to relocate. Especially happy to see that I did a reasonable good job on the long leg to 9’th. Compared to 2’nd stage I can only be happy with the result as 20’th.

Stage 5: The plan was to go hard from the start and try to catch up some time, as my legs and ankle felt better. Started out well but got surprised by flooding one the northern route one the long leg to 3 and lost a lot of more than 4 mns to the runners around me. With time loss in the circle at 5’th, 6’th and 9’th control (a control most runners lost time on) I had by now been passed by more than 5 runners. With a decent run on the last third of the course I was able to gain one place on the stage and ended as 38. Not quite a top 20-25 as was the goal before hand.

All in all it was a great week in Örebro and it’s always a great experience to run O-Ringen and you know it’s well organised, with good courses and maps and with so many Danes around and good company it was a fun week.

Norway

Since 1 May my base has been in Oslo. The focus has been on improving my running skills in the tough Nordic terrain as well as my navigation skills. It has been tough period, but beneficial. The conversion to tough Norwegian terrain has not left me with out marks. I have had a few close encounters between my knees and Norwegian rocks. Hence I haven't been able to do any proper interval sessions in the last 1-1½ month, but have been able to put in some faster uphill running and stair intervals.

NORT and Jukola with Bækkelaget
together with the national coach, I decided to do the NORT (Nordic Orienteering Tour) even tough it would be without fresh legs due to the hard training period just before.

The legs finally loosened a bit before Jukola, and I ran with a big surplus of energy, unfortunately a bad route choice and a mistake half way left me some minutes behind. I was able to speed up and gain close a couple of minutes of the lost time on the last part of the course, but more than three minutes behind around 23 position is not good enough. From Tiomila we knew that we had a great team and our goal was top 10, but also that a good performance by all of us could lift us even higher. Due to mistakes and injuries we ended as 13’th team, still a decent result.

WOC Selection races:
My focus have been on preparing my self so good as possible for the Long test race in Verdal in early July. Due to the knee trouble I had to shift some of my focus from the sprint, and only did one good sprint training with Rasmus Søes, Mikkel Lund and Maja & Zenia leading up to the test races, where I got a god response technically. Looking back I have to admit that I trained too much between Jukola and the last NORT stages and between NORT and the selection trials. Running at an odd hour at Jukola and the lack of sleep is somehow always more demanding that I presume. Hence I wasn’t fully rested before the trials which I felt on the in the middle and long distance races in the demanding terrain.

Sprint
It was expected that the sprint would be long, hence my plan was to start 'easy' and focus on the navigation, it worked well though I was still 4'th at control 4. The focus was on the long legs, and the plan was to carefully select the best route choice and push hard, which also worked well have 3'rd best split on both the long legs even though I lost 3-5 sec missing the last turn before 9'th control.  As for the last couple of races I had to take pain kills to be able to run properly (bend the leg more than 90 degrees) due to consecutive smashing of my right knee into Norwegian rock (before Jukola, before the WC in Raufoss and on the WC in Raufoss - guess it takes more than 2 month to learn to stay upright in Norwegian terrain ;-). I did 2 mistakes and three bad route choices. Lost time (5 sec) on the route to 5'th, as I not as planned ran straight down the slope as there was to much scrub in the terrain, hence the right route around the house was faster. lost 3-5 sec on the way to 9'th as I missed the turn between the houses. Didn't see the passage to 12'th and lost 5 sec going around the house. lost some 5 sec as I lost the  map contact to 17'th and searched to early. On the route to 20'th it was 7 sec faster going more straight. All in all the speed matched the best, but I made a too many mistakes (approx 25 sec) and with 35 sec behind Kvaal who did a good race with a small time loss on the long leg to 9'th,  it was enough for 8'th place.

Middle
The middle was never important for me due to the strange Danish selection system (The philosophy of having the best possible team with the best runners don't count for the Danish team anymore - as the only team in the world?) where two runners are preselected based on their Junior results and Tue Lassen have proved that he deserved the 3'rd spot. Hence the plan was to focus on the navigation and safe some power for the long distance. The plan felt apart on the way to first control, as I missed 45 sec due to an unmapped watercourse junction which sent me too far down the hill. I got a little stressed and with another big mistake at 4'th, I couldn't help to work a little more with the speed. With a very bad route choice to 10'th where I lost 1½ mns the race could not be saved. I got company with Christian Christensen. After the arena passage CC took the lead and I never got it back. Lesson learned: There is no easy races, you need to focus even though your not going fast!

Long
The focus for the test races has been on the long distance and with the good result on the sprint I had the backpack full of confidence. The plan was to go easy from the start, but not too easy as the first 1/3 was expected to go in fast open marshy terrain and the last 2/3 in terrain similar to the middle distance. I knew the long legs, the butterfly and the last 20 mns of the course would be crucial. We (the BSK gang) expected that all legs except the long legs more or less would be fastest so close to the line as possible, so the tactic was easy.

It was a fantastic start, straight out in some awesome terrain, even though I started maybe a little to easy. Did a stupid 2 mns mistake at 4'th as I dropped to much going out of 3'rd control. Hesitated a lot on the semi long leg to 8'th and tried to go over the hill, but finally decided to go round, lost 45 sec or so on not being consequent.

Got Company with Olle Kärner, and due to the terrain and that on all the shorter legs the best route was on or close to the line we only separated on the long legs with slightly different route choices. The legs were not feeling as good as I expected and I had a feeling that I was not running fast enough. I'm still not 100 % best friend with the terrain which might influence the speed as well as my dodgy knee. Was focused on not making any mistakes in the end and at the same time not drop too much in speed. Managed well except a ½ min time loss on last control, before I realised it was the same as yesterday.

Have to be impressed by the times clocked by the locals, this show how important it is to train in specific terrain.

WOC 2010 - Trondheim
No WOC of me, even though I won two out of three selection races - unfortunately the selectors’ valuation of my races are that they will not be sufficient to qualify for a A-Final!!!

Hence I'm not going to experience the great sunset in Trondheim. At least the car trip to Trondheim meant a stop over in the world heritage listed Røros, for a rhubarb cake and a Hot choco, so the trip was not totally waste of time.

Though Would have been nice to know beforehand that we didn't ran for a WOC place, a few of us might not have made the 2 times 8+ hours car trip. Unfortunately our head coach is not world Champion in Communication.....

Strange to experience that Denmark (as the only team?) is not sending the strongest possible team to a World Champs - never heard of that before!

Danish Champs W-end
After 1½ month where I have gone from one problem to another ranging from food poisoning, a sprained ankle, an asthma diagnosis to an unmoveable knee and the compulsory follow on troubles, which means that I haven’t done any fast sessions except the competitions I have competed in. Hence I was really unsure of my leg speed and form leading up to this w-end.

Danish Long Distance Champs Krengerup 25 April 2010 – Mass start
My plan was to go hard from the start to be sure I was with the lead after the three loops (Motela forking) and then hope there was power enough in the tank to make it home on the last long loop. The tactic more or less worked as I was in the lead with companionship with Rasmus Søes (who had the same order on the 3 loops and lead me the way where I hesitated or made mistakes) as we were in the lead after each of the three loops. I made mistakes at 3'rd and 20'th (around a minute in total). Rasmus then had the lead the way until 27’th where we both lost time (I 60 secs and  Ramus 2:15). Hence I got a 1 min lead, Rasmus was caught by the chasing pack with Tue & Rene with Rasmus Djurhuus about 15 sec behind chasing them. The decider was the long leg to 31’st. I went for the straight option and the rest of the boys took the wide northern track option which was just over ½ a min faster. Rasmus Djurhuus got contact with me on 32’nd. He took the road around to 33 and gained 20 meters. And as I ran for the wrong butterfly loop to start with, and lost a minute and Djurhuus was gone. I was feeling tired by now but kept the same pace as Djurhuus, and was able to narrow the gap as Djurhuus made mistakes in the end and I got a glimpse of him before 44’th were I saw him 30 sec ahead of me on the road. I finished 32 sec behind Djurhuus and had a gap on just 2 mns to Rasmus Søes who took the Bronze.

Danish Sprint Champs – Nyborg Vold 24 April 2010:
A nice surprice, the body was responding better than I had feared and I opened in high pace and was leading with 6 sec at 4’th control (10 sec faster than Mikkel Lund the Winner). Did a mistake (13 sec behind fastest split) at 5’th when I changed my route choice after running a few steps in the other direction and took a poor route to 7’th as I climbed over the rampart (12 sec behind fastest split: running along the lake on the eastern side below the rampart). My last mistake was going to 11’th as I misread the position of the tower and drifted to the left (14 sec behind fastest split). Have to be happy with my speed had 3 fastest splits and 13 splits where I was among the three fastest (out of 21 controls). Ended fifth 11 sec from the silver position and 27 sec behind the winner.

Happy to see my two Bækkelaget SK team mates (Mikkel Lund & Tue Lassen) were one and two from the top, when I could deliver a good race.

The good news was that the body felt better than feared, the results as expected but not as good as I hoped for.

Now the focus is on Tiomila with Bækkelaget SK with me on the long night leg and Eliteserien in Norrköping on Friday.

Night Orienteering
The winter is over and with that the night O-season as well. Though with Tiomila looming in the near future, Night-O is still high priority for another couple of weeks.

I spend the last couple of days in Finspång on a Tiomila preparation camp with Bækkelaget. For me there were only night-o on the menu, due to a soar knee from a bruise at Spring Cup and Eliteserien.

The two night-o trainings in difficult terrain was good preparation navigation wise for the Danish Night-O champ the following evening. The Camp included a Tiomila selection race Friday evening on a course from Kolmården Kavlen 2009. The course was planned as a day leg, so we where challenged navigation wise in the cold dark night. I got a good feeling navigation wise, and most of my time were due to a misunderstanding concerning the control codes on the EMIT stands. The selection race was a good reminder about how important the technique and compass are at night.

Very early the next morning I flew from Norrkjöping to Copenhagen and from here I went straight to Jutland for the Danish Night O Champs in Grenå Plantation.

The agenda this time was 15.3k in a flat forest with simple navigation. My tactic was to make it simple and ran around the as much as possible.

I made a few ½ mns mistakes and lost around a minute on 24’Th otherwise my biggest time loss was when I had to find the 2’nd last control and the way home without light. I tried to make it as simple as possible but unfortunately someone had placed a few big rocks at the edge of parking area on my way to the last control and in the dark dark forest I managed to run straight into it with my left knee. The Head lamp defect stunt did set me 1½ mns back, but didn’t influence my placing, just the training the next couple of days.

EOC 2010 Training Camp Kiten - Bulgaria
Ohh yea after 2½ week in cold rainy Australia I was looking forward to this trip to Sunny beach in Bulgaria - Yep that's the name of the coast line.

To my big disappointment the name only lived up to the expectations for the first two day, for the rest of the week we had to settle with clouds and 10-15 degrees.

We were eight Danish runner which got company by six Norwegians to guys and four girls. The first meant good as the two runners were Olav Lundanes and Anders Skarholt, the second meant good motivation >;-)

The terrain was very fast in most place CC managed to clock sub 4min/k in a thick code 3 forest. The terrain we expect to be most relevant though includes more hill slopes with rock features, but on the plateau there it still very few details and the ground is hard and very fast.

As part of the Camp we ran the Balck Sea Cup, which consisted of three individual races and a final race with chasing start. I managed to put my self out of contention early on with slow running and mistakes, but by the end of the week when the jetlag had lifted I managed to post the fastest spilt in chasing start on a sprint course in the sand dunes.

It was a great week with a lot of intensive orienteering and high speed. I think this terrain is going to suit us well and that we can expect some good results at the EOC 2010.

Australia and Malaysia
I was lucky to be able to fit in a good holiday around the autumn break, so why not going Downunder for some great orienteering experiences and get a chance to catch up with some mates.

For minimizing the jetlag I had 1½ day in KL on the way. Great place - you can hire a driver for a couple of hours sightseeing for DKK 200, live in a 5 start hotel at a low cost and enjoy a late evening run in 30 degrees on a 1,1 k athletics track in a park located in the city centre (KLCC park). And with this view from the Hotel Room I don't complain.

Australia was a different story - the first week can be described as 10 degrees and rainy. I did 5 orienteering races (Australian Championships in Sprint, Middle, Long and Relay and the Victorian Long distance champs) and it was raining for all of them, bugger!

But it was a great orienteering experience especially the AUS middle and long champs. Unfortunately I once again was hunted by a cold after spending the first two days outside in the cold rain and with a jetlag in my backpack.

To be able to lift my self next year it is essential that I'm able to cut down on my sick days, the plan is to train more wise. I have taken the first step by engaging a new coach.

13-09-2009 Danish Relay and Long distance Champs

One again I managed to get my self sick after the Danish Middle distance Champs. So the preparation before the weekend has been limited to a few short jogs.

I decided that I had to get the best out of it and still give everything I got in the races as I still might be in contention for medals.

Relay - Velling Snabegaard:
The Tisvilde Team was not as strong as it has been in recent years and we need a very good day to be able to run away with the Gold. We did a good team performance - Jesper David Jensen, Thomas Jensen and I, ended with the bronze medals in our hands. I started out 5 mins or so behind and knew that I had to put in a very good race to catch the two teams in front. Ran hard from the beginning but ½ way I had used a lot of power in the hills and the fatigue was hunting me. I finished only 2½ min of the pace of the fastest split for the day, so that gave my confidence a little boast before the Long distance.

Long Distance Linå Vesterskov:
What the Course wasn't yesterday it was today. A great course around a great forest. Unfortunately I felt a little worse this morning. The opportunity for a race in this terrain was not something I wanted to miss. After getting started I felt better than I feared and was able to keep a good pace on the paths, though the fun ended when I had to move the legs in the terrain.

Did a few mistakes but nothing more than 30 sec on any controls, but faded during the second half of the course and can only be happy with my 5'th place under the circumstances around 5 mns behind Rasmus Djurhus who won. He might have had a little extra power in the legs as we didn't ran yesterday as his team mates mispunched but then we might not have got the Bronze.. so is life.

29-08-2009 Danish Middle distance Champs - Gødding

It has been a much longer summer than anticipated. After the set back of not being selected to the primary goal in 2009 WOC in Hungary, I lost the motivation and have trained about half as much as planned. It is always difficult to persuade yourself to train, when the national coach and selectors eliminates you with any proper reasoning or explanation and you have performed well in competitions in relevant terrain (Hungary) and on the distances you have nominated for. It's even harder when the guys selected haven't showed form or strength in relevant terrain and on the distances they are selected for.

I knew that I probably still had the speed due to good form in June and a good basic training through the spring. I therefore expected to be able to fight for the medals even though the WOC team should be peaking around now.

I started out with focus on the navigation and a plan about pushing the pace where possible without gambling with the navigation. The legs were feeling heavy but still I felt that I shoot a good speed so I felt comfortable.

Made two significant errors, the first on the way to 6'th where I lost the direction in the green and still think I'm on target when I hid the track but realise the mistake when I'm standing with both feet firmly in the marsh, and my memory tells me that the instructions stated that there shouldn't be any marshes on the map! MERDE 1 min long gone! back on track, but I'm a little wobbly on 8'th and 9'th and loose around 10 sec's on both. The other significant mistake which take me out of the equation containing the medals is on the way to 13'th. I get pushed to much to the east by the green and do a parallel error and search in the wrong spot and another 45 sec's just vaporised into the blue.

Did okay on the last loop, except for the route choices to 20, 21 and 22 which meant that even the silver was long gone.

Have to be happy with my physical fitness, only Rene Rokkjær ran faster in the forest than me, but have to admit that the lack of orienteering over the last 1½ month made my navigation too rusty, and therefore I had to settle with 6'th place.

Summer training camp Asiago - Italy
The terrain around Asiago in the northern part of Italy is not relevant for any races in 2009 or 2010 but it's alway great to come away to warm weather and great orienteering experiences.

The terrain is for most of the maps in the area quite step and rocky due to the 'high' altitude. As we Danes are not so used to the rocky ground it's always good training. All in all it was a good week with a lot of orienteering training, Hot Choco's and Gelate, what more can you wish for!

For me a spot in the team for WOC in Hungary. I have prepared myself better than most of the other Danes with training camps and races in Hungary over the last year.

So it was a tremendous kick in the face when Åke and Bjarne told me that I was not in the team. It's always a thought message to get and it gets even worse when you feel you have shown good form and results in relevant terrain and on relevant distances.

The hardest part was that Åke and Bjarne were not able to give me an explanation for why I was not in the team and the way they delivered the message.

13-06-2009 9th at Jukola Mikkeli with Pan Krisitanstad
After NOC I ran Forsa Games, without impressing anybody, but the body was responding better and better. Until Jukola we (Rasmus Søes, Rasmus Thrane and I) spend the time in the area east of Mikkeli and had some good training sessions with maps to get the navigation right before Jukola.

Pan Krisitanstad has never succeded at Jukola but we were still hoping for a top 10 place on a good day.

It was a good day and night. As for Tiomila I ran first leg. I still struggled a bit with the from especially on the 4k dirt road to first control and in the end. I can only be happy with my race as I finished as 9'th on first leg less than a minute behind the lead, on a day where the body didn't feel 100%.

Jukola 2009 was a good team effort for us and after 7 legs we ended 9th the best result for Pan Krisitanstad so far.

I didn't have sp high expectations to this Championships in tough Finish terrain. They didn't get higher when I was unlucky to catch some kind of food poisoning in Malmö the week before.

A struggled on the long distance and tried hard to keep a decent pace without luck. The only result I can be happy with from the champs is my first leg in the relay. I flighted very hard and just managed to keep an eye on the lead all the way home. The sprint was very disappointing as this was the distance I had the highest expectations for and I didn't even qualify for the final. I have to admit looking back that it doesen't give any sense running champs like this when you are not 100% fit.

I have been in Trondheim a couple of times before, all trips have been associated with orienteering, but not really much running as I on my previous visits to Trondheim have enjoyed the annual O-day (a big post season party with orienteers from all over Norway). This trip to Trondheim was different, as orienteering was the main purpose.

We got our first little warning when we were flying into Trondheim as snow was a part of the landscape. I have packed some warm close but was not prepared for the cold weather and cold accommodation. The Norwegians had 'stolen' our initial booked accommodation so we had to settle in some small cold camping cabins. Though we couldn't complain about the view

I was good to get a better idea about what we can expect next year => big tough marshes

Unfortunately the Camp was a little short for me as I twisted my angle very bad on the Middle distance race, and flew back to Denmark early to get some professional treatment.

Spring 2009 so far so good?

The year started well with many good training session and a lot of orienteering. February started with 1½ week with a flue but then a superb training camp in warm and sunny Portugal with many orienteering sessions.

With the good comes the bad, I wasn't fully rested before Portugal and I worked hard and trained well and suddenly I was feeling very tired and had to train with half effort.

By the end of March things suddenly got better and the legs started to respond again, and I did reasonable at Spring Cup and got four medals at the Danish Cross Champs (two individual and two for the team).

In April I could start do intervals again and the speed was slowly getting back. April included three Danish Champs , though I didn't do a good navigational run in any of them and ended up with two silver and one Bronze. April also included Tiomila, where I did a good first leg and finished second and a good team effort meant that PAN Kristianstad ended 7'th overall.

As a little icing on top I'm leading the Danish Trimtex cup ladder, not due perfect races, but I guess I have had a high bad performance bar.

So all in all I shouldn't complain about the achievement this spring, though I still have to get the navigation set before the Open Nordic Champs in Finland. I'm not to worried as with better fitness I always improve my navigation.

Looking forward to an awesome May...

26-04-2009 Danish Ultra Long Champs
It's always tough when the competition is expected to be longer than your longest training run for the last 2 month, as it was for me today.
Though the good thing was that the 26k as everyone expected would not take 2½ hour which is suppose to be the winning time. I started out in more or less normal classic distance pace, the legs were feeling okay without feeling flashy.

I started out loosing time on first control (1½ mns) as I drifted to the left as the 'white' pine forest was hard to parse in the 'right' direction and got confused when I ran into an unmapped marsh. Not the best start but it didn't take long before I settled into a good flow. Lost time again on the route to 10'th as I was reading ahead and took the wrong road and ended in the forbidden area and had to turn around.

(Organizers)

From here things looked much better until the last 15 mns of the course where I started getting tired, and my brain told me to take less optimal route choices as well as I didn't pay enough attention to my best mate Mr. Compass.

Tough I had a good feeling on the middle part of the course, which also is indicated by fastest splits on many of the longer legs. course was not a traditional Ultra long course as there wasn't any super long legs as it was not possible in the selected forest as there always would be an easy road option. Though the courses were fine under the limitations set by the forest

25-04-2009 Danish Sprint Champs
Was feeling well prepared, did sprint training in Roskilde Wednesday, got new super light and fast shoes... just run!

I knew it would be a very fast sprint with a few tricky controls in the end. Started out well and didn't have trouble selecting the good route choices. It was a shame that the map was shown for 2 mns in the start boxes as it gave us the options to check out all the possible passages between the buildings and around the castle before the start. According to the wise men this procedures is compulsory per the current rules for Danish Champs.

I lost time on both the Long legs, on the first as I wasn't consequent enough and over shot the path in the green and by taken a longer route on the second.

Though the shit hit the fan when I entered the little maze around 15'th control as I didn't see the small entrance to the control from East in the real world and ran around to enter from the other side. But the crucial mistake was when I didn't read the clue sheet heading for second last control. I punched the wrong control and continued to the last control. Suddenly Rico was not ahead anymore and people was yelling about remembering to check the codes... shit I saw the mistake and had to go back.

(Tutzon)

There were a few mispunches today, the lesson to be remembered by me and the rest is that the clue sheet is VERY important in sprint.

The effort ended with a Bronze medal which is not what I was hoping fore, but according to performance on the day I should be very happy with a medal!

19-04-2009 TioMila Skåne - Close but close enough?

We had high expectations to Tiomila this year. It was one home ground in Skåne, we got a few 'reinforcements' compared to last year and we were more prepared than ever.

As allways it's crucial to make it through the night without major mistakes and then anything can happen.

My job as 1. leg runner was therefore to do a safe good technical run. I knew I would have the strength to close smaller gaps from mistakes or long splits. So my aim was to go and let the other teams do the work while I from around 4'th spot could 'control' my race.

From the beginning I took the safe route choices and felt good. At the TV control (nr. 9) we suddenly could see a group ahead, we had not made any mistake and had kept a decent pace, so I was surpiced. At first I wanted to close the gap as soon as possible, but talked my self into relaxing and focus on the navigation, and told my self that I could close the gap at the spectator legs.

Going out of control 119 I pushed very hard and could just se a few lights in the distance, but I knew the control would be common so the risk was low. At the end of the meadows I had contact with the group ahead groovy! The I was a little wobbly on the next control but could close the gap to the leaders on the next couple of easy legs and suddenly at the 5'th last control I have joined the leading pack. We were all together at the 3'rd last control and we all went straight except one who was clever and took the southern track option and finshed ½ a min ahed of the pack.

I'm happy with my race, it was just according to the plan.

Keepint the flag and spirit high!

Claus lost some time on second leg, but we kept the spirit high and flighted through the night. Especially Jakob Lööf did a fantastic long night where we almost got a glimpse of the leading pack.

When the night was over and the sun approached we figures on the result board ended on 7. We were aiming a bit higher than that, but we have to be happy with the results anyway, it was a good team effort and I'm sure we be back next year to fight for a top position.

Lööf: Bästa insatsen i stafettsammanhang
Bloch: Jag sjabblade bort topplaceringen

17-04-2009 Eliteserie Sprint Helsingborg
As preparation for the Danish Sprint Champs, and to get training in running sprint in forest (which is relevant for the 2009 WOC sprint in Hungary) I decided to do the Eliteserien sprint in Helsingborg.

I knew my speed is not quite up there where I like it to be, due to my fairly easy period from the trining camp in February until the start op April, where I haven't had the strength and energy to do interval sessions and hard hill sessions.

I was focus on delivering a good technical race and put the running element in second row. Started out well and got a good feeling with the map. Though was a bit rusty with navigation in 'over-speed'. Hesitated a bit going out from fourth and couldn't decide if I should go straight or around and lost almost 10 sec. Got confused going to the spectator control and did an extra loop around some bushes with in total set me 20 sec's back. apart from these two time losses is was consequent in the navigation and the feeling navigation wise was good. I still have a little to go with the speed. With more and more surplus I'm confident that the speed will come when I start introducing intervals in the training again.

Ended as 13'th just over ½ a minute behind Hramov.

06-04-2009 Hungary - WOC training Camp

For easter I decided to head south and get some quality training and a get a better feeling with the terrain around Miskolc and Eeger where the WOC will be held in August 2009.

I was the only Dane to go to the 2'nd official training camp joining the top runners from Norway, Finland, Hungary and Switzerland, as most other Danes internationals spend Easter in Sweden running 7-manna and Eliteserien.

I had a great opportunity to learn a bit more about the Hungarian culture as I was accommodated at the Kovacs' residence in Eger.

The week of training commenced with a three o-trainings in cast terrain in Slovakia relevant for the Long distance final. The negative contours is not something we are used to in Denmark (there is only one map on Djursland there has this type of contours) and it always surprises me how deep the depressions are. Though it's a great feeling running in the type of terrain when the navigation is just in the box and you have the perfect flow.

The trips to Slovakia was followed by 4 days of training in the Bukk mountains relevant for the rest of the distances at WOC. I was lucky that the threes just came into leaf before my arrival so the forest was green and beautiful and the visibility was reduced compared to our training camp in Autumn.

The week ended with four competitions, sprint, Middle Qualification and Final and a long distance.

Sprint:
The three competition days started with a Sprint in a Park in Eger with in walking distance from Adam's house. It was a fast sprint with many controls where you were stressed all the time in the beginning. Tried to push hard but didn't feel supersonic but it was enough to put me into third place behind Adam and Øystein.

Lost a little time on the long lake going into the bath/spa area as I over shoot the entrance in the fence. After the race I was set for some Goulash soup which is compulsory in Hungary ;-)

Analysing the race with Adam:

Middle:
Planned to go hard. The course was somehow different to what I expected. A few longer legs and no really technical parts and the most of the controls were visible from a long distance due to the open terrain. Felt okay even though the last couple of days hard training. Made on stupid mistake heading for 8'th. Did the safe route choice around on the road, but as I turned into the terrain I saw a control and packed the map in my pocket and just ran up there. But what! it was the wrong code, I couldn't relocate immediately and lost 3 mns on this error, which left med outside top 10 who would ran the A Final in the afternoon. The good thin was that I was only 4 mns behind so it indicates that the speed is not too bad after all.

I just cruised around in the B Final which navigation and course setting wise was similar to the qualification. Few controls, some long legs and not too technical control points.

Long:
I knew it would be a tough race, due to the heat distance (16,7) and Climb (700m). My aim was to do a good technical race and get a good flow. It all starts a bit wobbly at second and I'm lying down on the way to second. There is a tough climb up to 3'rd where I'm strugggling a bit, the legs were not ready for big climbs. Surprisingly they were feeling fine on flat and down hill. Didn't do any major mistakes and was able to finish strong on the last couple of controls. So I'm happy with the race even though I was around 10 mns after a fresh and peak Olav Lundanes. This Race was a perfect training for the WOC long distance and there is a lot I can take with me from this race.

All in all it was a perfect start of spring with many orienteering quality sessions in Hungary. The body feels much better as I had plenty of time to rest in-between the trainings and the temperature above 20 degrees made it even better.

04-04-2009 Danish Night Champs - Søgaard
Was actually looking forward to this competition. First is was a good chance to test the night skills in a competition before tiomila, second it's the first Danish Champs of the year. I did very well last year until I lost a lot of time and the gold in the end searching for dudgy controls.

I knew my shape was not fantastic, but in night orienteering that's not the most important thing, I just had to go out there and do a good technical race and everything would be sweet.

I got very surprised when I got the map it was so small and so hard to read. Had a hard time seeing the small roads in the green just out from the start. The tactic was to go round every time the forest looked a bit thick and green. I'm sure it would have worked well but as I lost some time searching for 5'th control I got a little stressed and went straight through instead of round for control 6'th. In total a 2½ mns time loss..merde!

Managed to get back on the horse but got in trouble again at 16'th as the exit angel out of 15 was 90 degrees out and another minute was lost.

Did okay with small time loss on 19'th and 22 and was suddenly leading on 27'th with only 8 controls to go in semi-open forest. Got stuck on the route to 30'th and was to defensive running out of 33'rd and now is was 45 sec behind. It all ended with a smashed headlamp (was only the second competition I used it in) and a silver spot on the podium.

26-03-2009 Spring Cup
Finally the legs is starting to improve a bit and i had a better feeling than I have had for the last month.

Spring Cup - Classic Tisvilde Hegn East
The plan was to go hard but focus on the navigation in the flat areas. I managed to get a good start and were 4'th on the first radio. My legs were feeling okay and better than expected. I did a stupid mistake on on 8'th control focusing too much on the green and don't notice the open noll. Feel very lucky on 17 as I can get the map right but go straight into the control, though I'm not that lucky on 20'th and loose more than 3 mns as many other runners. Was not able to mach the green, the vegetation boundaries and contours in reality to the map and visa verse. The late big mistake mente that it was hard to be happy with the race, so the only option was to take the positive response from the legs today and get ready for the relay.

Relay:
Ran first leg, the speed was high from the beginning, positioned my self around the 3'rd position in the way to first control. Our split was a bit longer, but we had contact to the group of runners from the other split so it was not difficult to close the gap over the next 5 common controls. Didn't feel super swift running but didn't have trouble keep-up.

The forking on the leg was unfortunately very sparse, so the field was divided in to groups one for each split. After the spectator control Iran straight instead of around on the roads to the control in the dunes. As I drifted a little too much to the right due to the other split control I hit the dunes more east than expected and I lost 1 mns searching for the control. Ended around two mns down on the lead.

Pan Kristianstad didn't have the best day and unfortunately we couldn't match the best teams and ended outside the podium.

As below we just have to look ahead for Tiomila on 'home soil', it going to be great!

20-03-2009 Danish Champs in 10 road race
The last couple of weeks have been tough I have struggled and have been feeling very tired, and haven't trained much. I decided to do race as I more or less have relaxed all week.

If I look back I'm not sure if I should have competed. I got very tired in the end and the calves felt very soar and tired. My time for the 10 k was

32:39 which is not impressive and I ended as # 34

08-03-2009 Danish Cross Champs
Since getting home from Portugal, I haven't used enough time on recovery, have worked a little to hard and haven't got sufficient sleep, so the legs has been feeling more tired than usual. Anyway I decided to give it a go at the Danish Cross country champs in Risskov in Århus (same venue as the Danish sprint champs last year.

Long (10k) 7'th March
Started a bit defensive as I was unsure of the state of my legs. The course was designed with a lot of curves and a few hills and the surface was almost only grass. It was a bit muddy and with all the 'stops' turns and a few good climbs, the 2k loop course served us orienteers well.

The good experience from the race was that I was able to go faster than the athletics boys in the hills and I had a good surplus in the end and the last lap was my farstest. I ended as # 19 (34:58).

Other Orienteers were:'
Claus Bloch # 11 (34:33)
Rasmus Søes # 12 (34:38)
Full results here

Short (4k) 8'th March
Same route as yesterday, but the difference was that it had been raining all night so this time it was deep mud, even better for us orienteers. Everyone expected that we did worse on the short cross, but I guess most athletics runners don't run two competitions in a row and we had a big advantage due to the muddy conditions. So the results were:

Rasmus Søes # 7 (13:46)
Rune Olsen # 12 (13:52)
Claus Bloch # 17 (13:58)

Even better Signe Søes won the female short cross, I'm sure all the cheering and support from the other orienteers lifted her to the victory!

Portugal
The initial plan was to go hard for the 7 days 9in Portugal, but on arrival I haven't ran for a week. It meant that the legs and body was feeling tired for the first couple of races.

I felt better and better as the days went by and managed to do some good technical trainings and a lot of hours which were the plan for the camp.

We were lucky with the weather, it is always easier to train hard under the warm sun you body recovers better as you have more´ time to rest on training camp than at home.

14-02-2009 New Season - looking good so far
The orienteering season started early this year. The first training camp with Pan Kristianstad start on the 3'rd Jan in freezing conditions in southern Sweden preparing us for Tio-mila on home turf.

With a few new names on the club roaster the team is looking better and better for Tio-mila and the spirit on trainingcamps are higg. Everyone is very much looking forward to this years Tio-mila where we have a team there can keep up with the best.

Have been three times in the southern Sweden for training more technical orienteering and to be able to do a lot of hill training just in January 2009. So training is going as scheduled and I'm looking forward to the break with a training camp in Portugal in late February.

WOC 2009 Training Camp Hungary

First camp for the 2009 WOC. I'm very happy with the terrain. Fast, hilly and big contours is just my taste.
The plan was to get a lot of experience and feeling of the terrain and do two good cometitions (Long qual and Long Final).

Long Qual:
The terrain should be similar to the WOC long terrain, so very relevant. Planned to do safe navigation and push the pace where I could do it witout any risk. Did okay except for 2 not optimal route choices and one 45 sec mistake. Happy with the placing as 6'th less than 2 mns behind the heat winner.

Long Final:
Was a bit wobbly in the beginning and lost time on 2'nd and 4'th, but after that got a good rhythm. Only problem was that I ran into a trunk on the way to the butterfly control for the first time. Was able to maintain my concentration and speed, but after the two butterfly loop the leg started to stiffen, and it got more and more painful to run especially downhill. Ended up walking the last 2½ k or so. Anyway it was great to get a feeling for what we can expect next year on the long distance.

18-10-2008 Blodslitet
The classic season closer in Norway. Legs and body are back up to speed so really looked forward to this competition.
As usual it is important to keep a good pace and maintain safe navigation on the first 3 loops, to make sure you are not behind the pack. Did a decent job on the loops, but was a little to slow on the 2'nd half of the 3'rd loop and ended 45 sec behind the pack. Tried to push the pace but started to make mistakes and took a few bad route choices, meaning that gap was not closing but getting bigger and bigger....

Anyway was great to get out there and feel the legs wants to run again.

05-10-2008 Danish Club Champs
Hjermind is a nice forest in Jutland with some great areas. Though didn't feel quite on top today due to a cold. Anyway managed a decent job tried to go safe navigation wise as I knew I didn't have the power in the legs. Even though all the elite runners from Tisvilde-Hegn OK did a poor job the jungsters and the oldies did a good job and we once again secured the title as the best Club in Denmark

21-09-2008 Danish Ultra Long Champs
Not sure if I looked forward to this or not. I know I'm not quite there yet in relation to my fysical strength after my light overtraining in August, but was keen to figure out where I'm standing at the moment.

Started with a little panic as I was late at the start and got the wrong clue sheet, setting me 20 sec behind, as well as I had to stop at the start triangle to figure out where to go.

After this I took some conservative route choices trying to avoid the worst green and be able to keep a good pace. Navigation wise I didn't make too many mistakes, I just have to admit that the shape is not quite there where I can go hard and fast for more than 2 hours yet.

13-08-2008 DEN Relay and Long Championships Rømø
I really looked forward to a great orienteering weekend at Rømø. It all started great we got accomodated in a great holiday appartment with a fantastic view over the ocean.

Realy:
Tisvilde Hegn has great merits in the relay. We have won the title the last 3 years, and the plan was to do it again. The team looked good (Me, Thomas Jensen & Jamie Stevenson).

I started okay on the first leg. Had long splits on the two first gaflings (control 2 and 5) but was able to see Tue (Fåborg) and Sigge (Hillerød) due to the very good visibility on the open heather area. Made a small mistake going into the forest on 12'th and lost the sight of PAN and Fåborg. Didn't manage to find a good route through the green to 15 and suddenly I was one minute sown on the lead. I didn't have the extra gear to catch them again and changed over as 3'rd team about 1½ minute behind. TJ made a few mistakes and could keep up with the two team in front, there due to only one split  from control 5 on (control 24) more or less ran together for the rest of the relay. Disapointing result, but we can win every year even though that would be nice! We'll be back next year

Long Distance Championships
Fantastic day, warm and sunny, ready to go orienteering! Though the day didn't end that well. For the first time in a long time the start gap was 4 mns and with a butterfly it was a good starting point for a fair competition.

Already before I started I hear rumours that the controls in the butterfly was very hard to find (a few former national team runners had to continue on without the controls as they just couldn't find them!) so I was very focused on the navigation going into the butterfly. Even though I could match the map and terrain at all. The distance and details in the green (which my opinion should at least be one grade more green on the map). I was very lucky with control 8 but I just couldn't fins control 9 and yes it's only about 30m from a distinctive yellow area which I relocated of about 5 times without being able to find the control! In the end I ended up just running around like the "flies in a bottle"
and after searching between 25 small noll in dense green forest I wasn't happy at all!

at 12'th I was caught by Christian Christiansen with 16 mns. Pushed the pace up again and kept him behind me until 18. Did the straight option to 19 and lost some time. We were together until 24, when I again took the straight option to 25 but got caught in some timbered trees and had to go wide around and lost more than 1½mns. Great mapping! from then I just cruised home.

Looking at the split, I can put a little confidence in the backpack the speed is not as bad as I feared. No mistakes in Winsplits and I'm only a few sec. behind Christian. Really looking forward to good courses and maps, that be the Swedish Champs in a couple of weeks time.

30-08-2008 DEN Middle distance Championships - Borup Southwest

After my exam (2*8 hours written exam) the 11 & 12 August I started straight away back at work and continued training hard. By the end of the week I was feeling very tired and had some light overtraining symptoms. So the last 2½ week I have been training very light only 2 high intensity trainings.

Therefore I was unsure about my current form. But there was nothing to worry about I had a good speed in the forest.

I decided to go hard from beginning. Didn't feel superb but pushed hard. Caught a "slower" runner at 4'th control, the last couple of times that have happened I have made mistakes on the following legs. I rushed my navigation a bit and didn't follow the plan and made a ½ mns mistake at 6'th a poor route to 8 and 9. a 15-30 sec error on 13'th and we were together again. and then I lost 15 sec on the second last and 10 sec on the last control to very stupid mistakes. I had the legs to play for gold but due to poor concentration I ended 6'th 1:04 behind Jamie. Was leading with 20 sec on 5'th control, so that's just not good enough.

26-05-2008 EOC Latvia - RunO 'på spanden' - In trouble

My first international Champs didn't go as I was hoping for. It didn't seem that I managed to keep my shape from the training camp in Czech to this champs.

My schedule:
Monday: Sprint Qualification and Final
Tuesday: Long Qualification
Wednesday: Long Final
Thursday: Rest day
Friday: Rest day
Saturday: Rest day
Sunday: Relay

Sprint:
Qualification:
We knew that good races was need for qualification for the afternoons A-final, so the tactic was clear. Focus on navigation and fast running where the navigation made this possible. Didn't really do any technical mistakes but didn't feel that I could push hard enough. Got lactic in the arms and couldn't get the heart rate up high (max average heart rate was about 3-6 beat under the usual level). Anyway I qualified in 12'th spot 27 sec behind in the closest heat.

Final:
Felt good in the beginning but made a small mistake at 3'rd, 4'th and 6'th control and start getting tired in the middle part of the course and totally lost the pace in the sand dunes in the end. Ended with a disappointing 26'th spot more than a minute behind (though only 4 sec to a top 20 spot).

Sprint Final and in trouble (på spanden!)

Long qualification:
Tried to push fairly hard from the beginning, but felt tired, was a little bit wobbly on the three first controls, but was surprised when I was passed by Erik Öhlund on the way to 6'th control. I had no chance in keeping up with his speed but did okay until 10'th control where I lost the direction and lost some time. Another surprise on the way to 11'th suddenly Pasi Ikonen was coming from behind (started 4mns behind!). Shit... His pace was considerable slower than Öhlunds so I tried to push my self to keep up with him. Qualified in 10'th spot (as the only male Dane I therefore was ready for the A-final), but was totally drained for energy after the race. I got trouble with the stomach during the sprints yesterday.

Long Final:
I knew it was going to get tough, but knew I had to keep a good pace to get a satisfactory result. Started weel on 1'st and 2'nd control, bur made a parallel error going to 3'rd and searched for the control too far east and lost around 3 mns. Saw the guy starting 3 mns behind running away. Going to four I already started to feel tired in the sand! not a good sign. Got caught by Mats Haldin going out of 4'th control. From were on I didn't have the power to do anything usefull. The terrain was a lot different to what we expected and a lot of water and green marches made it extra tough. Was on my own on the last loop and suddenly the terrain was more friendly, nice and open pine forest.

Was totally wasted after the race and spend most of the evening on the bathroom floor with stomach trouble, and eating apricots, prunes and prune yoghurt.

Relay:
Finally the stomach was getting better and the legs were gaining power again. Ran with Christian Christensen and Rasmus Djurhuus who did a very good job on the first two legs and I could ho into the forest in 6'th position. Did well until 7'th control where I thought I past the horse shoe hill more to the right and suddenly I had lost 1½-2 mns. Got back into speed but at the 10'th control I got in trouble. I was totally sure on the map and navigated straight to a hill with a control (was actually a gully and 30m north of my own control). Very surprised the code didn't match, shit where could I be? the map looked right! Decided that I had to go out to the open to relocate. Couldn't relocate and spend too much time before I relocated at the track junction south of the control. From here on it was up-hill the rest of the course. Only good thing though was that the legs were still feeling okay.

All in all:
Physical my body was tired and I didn't have the power to do some good races. The lack of power turned my focus from the navigation and I made too many mistakes. The stomach trouble meant that over the week in Latvia I lost 3 kg!

Great to see Signe taking the last step to the World elite, as the boys couldn't deliver the results.

Now I just have to look forward and get the power back so I can deliver a good performance at the World Cup in Norway and hopefully a ticket to WOC in Czech.

As my camera now is out of order, I'm not able to upload the maps at the moments, but take a look at http://www.eoc2008.lv

10-05-2008 EOC Trials Kristianstad:

Had a fairly easy week of training after a hard training camp in Czech, so focused on some speed work and nursing my left calf.

Sprint:
The legs were feeling strange before the race, guess it had something to due with the excitement of trials for a Championship.
Due to a late start time I heard the times from the first runners and knew it was going to be around 12 mns running (normal sprint winning time not like 17 mns as for the Danish Sprint Champs). I therefore Knew I had to push hard from the start. The course was fairly easy, most of the time just running around buildings in a park, though which is going to be very relevant for EOC (sprint Qual) and WOC (sprint Qual and Final). Didn't do any major mistakes but lost a little time on 3'rd when I hesitated to much and stoped short of the control. A little time loss on the route to 4 and 13. My biggest mistake was when I ran out of control 10 towards control 1 for a few sec's before I realised it (lost 6'sec to fastest time).

The race got me in just below 12 mns, as the only one. Great start to the trials..but... Just as I walked toward the result board I suddenly got a strange sensation in the right calf. SHIT another muscle strain?

Iced and got in under compress straight away and had it elevated the entire afternoon. The time was crucial as the second race was in the late arvo.

Middle:
Felt stiff and soar but wanted to give it a try. Warmed up for around 25 mns the first 5 by walking around. The calf felt soar but yes I could run, without too much pain (and normally you forget the pain when you have to focus on the navigation). Was still a little bit unsure about the conditions of the calf, so tried to go fairly easy on the first 2 controls and tried not to go max competition speed but keep just below. Managed to run well until 9'th (where I actually was in the lead). Lost time on 10'th stopping to early, and then hell broke loss as I lost time on 11 (25 sec) and 15 (45 sec) a I miss interpretated the map. And with another 45 sec time loss on 17'th it suddenly didn't look that good anymore and I finished on a disappointing 8'th place.

Not sure what went wrong, but one thing for sure was that I rushed too much with the navigation and didn't get a good flow. If it was due to the soar calf and to much focus on the physical performance i don't know.

Long:
The calf was very stiff after the Middle and felt soar. But again wanted to give it a go. So same procedure a long warm-up and the ready to race. Felt okay in the beginning of the race but ½ way on the first loop of the butterfly the calf started feeling stiff and soar, continued out on the second butterfly loop but the calf didn't cope well with the more hilly terrain, so decided to call it a day at the butterfly control and got a lift to the finsh.

Good news:
I'm ready for EOC and the Team Denmark medical team hasn't found any muscle flaw in my calf, and the pain and stiffness was probable due to the muscle and bone were to compact and some strange stretching got it in right place again.

28-04-2008 WOC training Camp Czech

After Tio I flew direct to the Czech Republic with the Danish National team for WOC training Camp. The leg got an entire rest day on Sunday an very light training on Monday, and it felt much better after, ice, elevation and massage. I ran very corcious the first 3 days and on Thursday on I ran for full. We ran three Competitions (sprint Thursday, Middle Friday, and Long Saturday). I did a reasonable job and ended 2'nd, 1'st and 1'st among the Danes.

Even though the start of the training camp wasn't so good, I trained around 14 hours running mostly orienteering and got a good feeling for the terrain in Czech which seems to fit me well.

27-04-2008 Tiomila Rosersberg slot

Pan Kristianstad 6'th in Tiomila 2008!

Travelled to Stockholm on Thursday to get a highly relevant night-o training. Unfortunately everything didn't go after the plan. After 3/4 of the course I suddenly felt light pain in the left calf. As the pain wasn't too bad I ran the rest of the course. But no no, as the calf got cold it got soar and stiff. I gave it ice treatment, but had trouble walking on Friday, so it didn't look to good for 'Långa natten' as it was planned I should run. I test 'drove' the calf on Saturday morning and it felt much better, I could run but it was painful going fast. Gave it another try in the arvo after the women's relay and had to take the tough decision not to run, as I couldn't guarantee the calf would last even for one of the short final legs.

So for the first time I was only a spectator at tio. Pan got a fantastic start with Rasmus Søes winning the first leg and Jakob Lööf finishing first after 'långa natten'. Pan Kristianstad was never worse that 14'th spot and we ended 6'th after a very good team effort.

05-04-08 The Silver  man
The w-end included the first Danish Champs in 2008. Night-O Champs late Saturday night (start 22:18) and Sprint Champs in the morning on Sunday (start around 12). A lot of people therefore didn't run the night-O as they prioritised the sprint champs. I gambled and went for the double whammy.

Danish Night-O champs:
Got very disappointed when I saw the map at the Wednesday training. Merde it didn't look interesting at all. The organisers wrote that the forest, was: very open and fast with no green or thick forest and therefore perfect for night-O. And why is that? doesn't sound interesting at all!

The worst was that the forest was not even close to the description. Maybe it would have been fast if the ground wasn't covered with branches, so all good route choices was around on the path. Open no green, not sure if the guy happened to visit another forest? We had plenty of control in green thick forest, and a few of them was quite challenging or should I say rough or fortuitousness.... The fact were that a lot of time was spend on dodgy controls in the green.

For a change the light training in the last couple of days made my legs want to run for a change. Felt good running, but still have to work with the speed (will introduce more intervals in the training over the next period). Did well in the beginning and caught Sigge with 3 mns going in to 7'th which I missed a little bit. Ran safe to 8 but missed around mns. as the yellow and the paths had changes, merde. got a good flow and was lucky on some of the controls in the green especially 14. The trouble started at 27. I was very afraid of this control so wanted to be sure to attack from a sure feature. So ran on the track next to the yellow until I could see the end of it and jumped over the stone fence, but no control in sight. searched a bit, and ran out to relocate and try again. 'Sadly' the control was just on the path just a couple of meters from where i attack the first time, so much for being safe and not just running down the track and hope ypu can spot the control! But it got worse as I missed 2mns on 28'th and 31'st. So much for a good race! Ended 2'nd which was a big surprise can only be happy with that considering my race, but yea nobody can be lucky on a course like that and don't miss less than 4mns.

Danish Middle Champs.
Different story, after not enough sleep and 1½ hour of racing in the legs a good warm-up was needed. Actually felt okay at the warm-up. Didn't thing about the length of the course when I started so the tactic was to push the pace whenever there was a chance. Lost a little going to 7 as I was on the way into the courtyard to 3'rd. Anyway I thing the best route choice must be going right around the building. Came behind on the map going out of nine and didn't see the narrow path before to late and lost 10 sec's. Lost a bit on 11 and 12. Pushed hard at the end and did well on the rest of the course. Very happy with the silver position, was sure all the mates there didn't do the night would be flying, but it seems that it only was Claus there had another gear. Lost around 30 sec, so could match the speed of Claus.

The big question is how can the organisers not realise that a 3,6 k course with so many legs around building can't be ran in 13-15 mns? It's embarrassing!

29-03-08 Spring Cup

Classic (shortened long distance)
First race in DK for the year. Had a lot of trouble with getting the navigation right and made many small bad micro route choices. Started with loosening time on the 3'rd control as I could see the control in the bush. On fourth it got even worse when I started searching after control on a little green hill not marked on the map, had my mind set on a saddle instead of a gully. Did reasonable from here except for some poor route choices. Unfortunately the legs were not feeling as good as I was hoping for. Hoped I could recover in two days after 3 competitions, intervals and a long run on Monday, intervals on Tuesday and a long hill run on Wednesday, but no surprise I couldn't.

Relay
Same assembly area as yesterday but most of the race in a different part of the forest.
Pan Kristianstad had 4 teams ready to go, including two very competitive teams:

1
Rune Olsen
2 Rasmus Søes
3
Johan Modig
4 Adam Kovach

1 Michael Sørensen
2 Jakob Lööf
3
Simon Svensson
4 Alexsander Minakov

I did a reasonable race, though had to get the body work hard here and there. Had a long split in the start and did't ran the optimal route to 3'rd so was a bit behind the pack. But as compensation I had the short split in the end and managed to finished 26 sec's behind.

Unfortunately the race didn't go as we were hoping for and we ended 5'th with the first team and 8'th and 14'th with the following teams.

22-03-08 Eliteserien (or what was suppose to be Eliteserien races)
Due to a lot of snow the Spring and Middle distance races lost it status as Elite series races. Anyway the competition was great and the terrain also very nice.

Sprint:
160 runners in 4 qualification heats with only 10 to advance to the final from each heat meant that no time for a cruise in the qualification. Managed a decent 8'th place after to not optimal route choices, but 3 fastest splits lead the way.

The qualification was primarily in park and urban area, but the final was much better with most of the race in forest. The snow was not too much of a problem as only a few legs took you of the paths. Did well except for a 35 sec mistake on 6'th which gave me the 21'st spot on the result board. Not too bad the training camp and 7-manna in the legs.

Middle:
Turned out not to be that funny as the early start position and snow was a bad combination. Did a poor technical race and felt I could keep a decent pace. After crashing into a water course with ice and a small twist of my right ankle I decided to head home.

21-03-08 7-manna
Have to admit that the legs didn't really have the kick to go fast after a lot of training in tough terrain and snow in Gothenburg. Even though did a okay race, where I managed to keep us in the game. Made one stupid mistake of 1 ½ mns but otherwise I can be happy with the navigation.

Due to trouble on the first leg we finished 5'th, a little disappointing.

14-03-08 Training Camp Gothenburg
Easter training camp with the national team in Gothenburg due to this years JWOC is placed here. Unfortunately we got two days with snow, but before that we got some very nice trainings including a middle distance on the map 'Nya Varvet' which was used for Champs meeting in 2007. Great map and great area

28-12-07 Cross-X Skiing and New Years at Kvitåvatn in Norway
A good week of training with many hours of cross-x skiing an a training to the highest top in southern Norway (Gausta).

And not at least a crazy and superb New Years celebration

14-12-07 Training camp Oxford and Wales
Time to visit a mate in UK, and what is better than combining it with a little bit of orienteering.
Did a great training in Wales on a map will have a hard time pronouncing 'Mynydd Llangatwy' don't say that's not a challenge.

The training was perfect a bit cold though, but running around in heather in good company and with a great view is great. I got a bit longer than planned, but after 3 hours we managed the following type of orienteering 'follow John', short distance, Long legs and a control picking exercise. To get a little more for the money we did a sprint in Oxford on Sunday and got a scenic guided jog around various old and very campus in town.

09-11-07 O-day and skiing in Trondheim
Had a few frequent flyer points I had to get rid of, and what better that a traditional end of year party in Trondheim and the first cross-x skiing this season, could be found... nothing!

A nice weekend in Trondheim with some hours of tough running in snow and the seasons first training on cross-x skies, and not at least a great party as always! This including Washing machine throwing and a visit from the fire brigade...

20-10-07 Blodslitet - Fredrikstad
The end of the season race. Had to chose between the DK Ultra Long champs and Blodslitet, not a hard decision - Blodslitet it is of course!
The shape had been getting better and better all autumn, so was feeling ready for the race. The tactic  was to keep a good pace in the beginning and focus on the navigation, as an error in the beginning will set you way back. Did a reasonable job on the first 3 loops ran half of it alone and got out on the final long loop just after a big pack including Emil Lauri (winner 2006) Mats Haldin, Øystein Kvaal among others.

Almost lost the pack as we were cruising towards the public control just 2k's from the finish, when I stopped at a drinks control and they speeded up! merde! Managed to get hold on them and finished in the middle of the group. Got an official 11'th place, even though my own counting it getting me into 9'th place as I finished just behind Øystein Kvaal (again problems with EMIT).

08-10-07 WOC 2008 training camp Zlate Hory Czech
7 days training camp in Czech. Did a longish mountain run on the way from Prague to Zlate Hory on the 8'th just to get a feeling of the great surroundings. Did a mixture of trainings relevant to middle, long and relay. It varied from Step continental terrain to detailed more plat terrain, almost like the are just north of Kristianstad in Southern Sweden.

A great week, and a great spirit on the team. We were a small pack including Mikkel Lund, Rasmus Søes, Signe Søes and I.

By the end of the week we competed in a WRE race outside Zlate Hory. It was a great field with the entire Suisse team present. Did a reasonable job, but couldn't help do a few mistakes, and the legs could feel the toll after 7 days of training camp.

Do I have to mention the Awesome Hot Choco they served for about 1 EUR in Pardubice on a café with live music... I guess I had to!

07-10-07 World Cup Final - Stein am Rhein - Suisse

WC 9 Post Finance Middle Distance
- Stein am Rhein - Hohenklingen Suisse and Germany!
What a difference compared to the DK Champs, this is how orienteering should be! I have never experienced such an intense atmosphere before, bloody awesome!

A Perfect setting for a nice. Start at a Castle, a nice forest, running in two countries (Suisse and Germany) and a finish in a crowded town with fantastic atmosphere. Did reasonable in the first part of the race, except for a small time loss on control 4. Started to make mistakes on 14'th and continued with a poor route to 16'th and a 2 mns mistake on 18. 3 mns error from 13 to the finish kicked me out of top 20 and a place in the A-final in the Sprint. Ended as 33'rd.

WC 10 Post Finance Sprint (B-final) - Stein am Rhein Swiss
Unfortunately my lack of points (a top 20 place yesterday) I was only permitted to run the B-Final. Though had to get out in the nice forest again. Tried to go fast except down hill where I was a bit cautious. Did two bad route choices and lost around 1½-2 mns. Ended 3'rd.

But what the heck now I could enjoy the fantastic city sprint in full, not bad at all...actually it was PERFECT! What a great organised race, give me more.

08-09-07 Danish Relay & Long Champs - Klinteskoven

A double in one of Denmark's best terrain. Last time used for the EOC long Final in 2004.

Relay - 08-09-2007
A few teams had problems due to sick and injured runners, so the competition didn't look as bad a expected.
Ran 2'nd leg, did a reasonable job and gave us (Tisvilde Hegn OK) a 3 mns lead, and with Jamie Stevenson on the last leg it looked very good indeed. Without trouble Jamie finished first - my 3'rd DEN relay Championship, there is till a bit to go before i catch Carsten Jørgensen and Thomas Jensen which got 5 or 6 all of course with Tisvilde Hegn OK.

The only problem with the race was the map. The mapping was poor, the course print was out and even the start triangle was misplaced about 80m!

Long - 09-09-2007
Shape is good and a lot of people out with illness so should do a podium place.... but it didn't go that easy. The Course setter did an okay course only problem was that the map what shit, and the controls were placed and hidden where the map was inaccurate. The first blow came at the first control. I ran past the control more than a few times without seeing it and lost more than four mns, great start. From here it was a long tough race. And what a nice forest! It deserves a better map...bugger

I had to pull out the map from 2004, and no surprise, it was much better than the map we ran on today, what a shame!

30-08-07

Euromeeting - Seefeld Austria

Sprint:
Beforehand it was known that the sprint would be 2/3 in forest and 1/3 in urban area. With 29 controls on just 2.9k it was expected that the controls were going to be very close in the forest part.

Started to slow as I was just cruising in normal middle distance pace. Made two 10 sec mistakes otherwise okay. Missed 40 sec on the first control in the urban area, as I lost the direction crossing the first intersection. Ended up around 2 mns behind, which was pathetic.

Had trouble with setting my self up for the races and didn’t really feel I gave 100%

Relay:
Ran first leg. My thigh was stuffed in the beginning so I was just cruising with the pack. Though due to large splits I had to go on my own from 3’rd. Got the wrong track on the way to 6’th but without checking the compass I didn’t discover it before it was too late so had to run the extra meters around the hill. Though this was not the major problem for the day. The major problem was that I couldn’t count from 6 to nine. Ran straight from 6 to 9. Struggled a bit with the pace and concentration on the next couple of legs, but pulled my self together after the spectator control and lost around ½-1 mns to the leaders with the same gafling. Another disappointing day.

Long:

Tried hard to set my self up for this race and focused on a good proper warm up. Started easy but first ‘mistake came’ fast. Took a bad route choice to 2’nd and lost 1-1½ mns. Did another poor route choice trying to go round to 5’th, and missed the direction out of 6’th. Saw a Suisse guy on the way to 7’th. Even though I did poorly in the beginning I thought I had caught him. Had him on my tail for the next 8 legs or so until I made a small mistake at 15’th. The butterfly looked crazy on the map, and yep I managed to stuff it up as well. Ran from 17-20 couldn’t find 20 realised the mistake and stuffed up 18 another 30sec. A poor route choice to 27 left me 7mns behind the winner.

Was happy with the fitness, though started a bit too easy, but still not focused enough, but I’m sure that’s not going to be a problem next week for the National champs

11-08-07 Very Disappointed!
I didn't get selected for the WOC team, even though I showed good form in the selection trials. The national coach though didn't stick to his announced selection criteria's and selected a couple of runners on there old merits.

Danish Middle Distance champs:
After the big dissapointment of not beeing selected for WOC I was keen to show that the National coach made a big mistake. I was looking forward to pull out a good race. Didn't feel too good during the week, but was focused on the job. Did a bad start though as I couldn't interpret the map around the first control as the green area was much higher and the map was drawn very rough. The mistake costed me 20 sec, and a fair bit of frustration, and it lead me a little to low on the 2'nd. Lost some time going too low 4 -> 5 as well as the control was much further up the hill than what I thought. I made two more navigational errors, overshooting 18 and checking too early on the second last. Only other time losses were from getting stuck a few times in some fallen timer (not shown on the map) on the way to 6, 8 and 22 which costed me around 10-15 sec each. Happy with the placing, Silver is not bad and Mikkel had a very good race. If I add all my time losses together it might add up to 1 min.

Happy to show that the National coach made some wrong choices when he selected the WOC team this week...

05-08-07 WOC Trials

This is what I have been waiting for after all the problems in early spring the goal for 2007 was WOC alone.
After a good Middle and a okay sprint at WC in Sweden (taking in to consideration tired body from jet lag), I gained some comfort before the trials. Unfortunately I woke up Monday with a soar throat, which kept me off from training for 3 days and put me on easy training for 2 days.

WOC Middle distance trials
Due to the bad lead up to the races my mind was set on navigation. The terrain was expected to be challenging with technical, green and vague areas. Was a bit wobbly to the first, and lost a minute on 3'rd, great start. I didn't thought I missed that much, so kept on going, and did okay from here except a loss on a route choice (to 14'th) which looked okay on the map but due to a flooded track it ended up being not so good. Another small time loss on 16'th otherwise good for the rest of the course. Got a 3'rd place (one sec behind 2'nd), which I can be very happy with after around 2½ min of mistakes.

Ukraine looks good from here!

WOC Long distance trials
The lack of power in the legs warried me before the race. Hence started in an easy pace and focused on safe navigation. Managed to lose maybe 20 sec on first, but found a fairly good rhythm, and were only a bit wobbly on a few controls until control 14. Saw Tue running out from the control as I had just left the road. Unfortunately I was seeking a little too high and lost around 1 minute on the control and never saw Tue again (He finished 4'th....bugger). The legs troubled me a little bit but I managed okay. Though lost some time on 21 and 23 but got into real trouble at 24'th and 26'th and lost a min on each. meaning I dropped from 3'rd to 5'th. A little disappointed with the result but it still looks okay.

A couple of minutes of less mistakes each day and the results would have looked very good, but I guess I'm not the only one there can state that! Even though the results should give me at least one distance at WOC in Ukraine, I'm feeling confident.

WC - O-Ringen -  Sweden

Long:
Got a little bit tougher than expected. The legs and body was feeling tired from all the travelling and jumping of time zones. Looked okay after the first 3 loops when I passed in 36’th spot. BUT totally faded after 1:25 in the long mass start event and ended 54.

Middle:
This meaning B-final for the middle. Did a reasonable job navigating lost around 1½ mns, but didn’t have the speed in the legs after the breakdown the day before so ended 8’th 40 sec behind the 5 place there would give an A-final in the sprint.

Sprint
Not a big surprise I didn’t have the legs after today, where I have struggled with the form. Ended 1 minute behind after making half a minute of mistake.

Maps and splits can be found here

Now it’s time to get some rest and get the speed back in the legs!

18-07-07

Mumbai (Bombay) - India

What an ugly start, had to get up 4:15 am to catch a one hour delayed flight of of Brissy. Even better had to do a stop in Sydney and Darwin so we could be another 2 hours delayed and I had a fair chance to lose my luggage….yep good enough all flights on my way home to Copenhagen were at least one hour delayed! Reason being, too dark in Brisbane? Too much wind in Sydney, to hot and humid in Darwin? Too messy in Mumbai? Too much rain in London… and that’s for sure.

Survived the tough negotiation in the airport concerning a taxi ride to downtown Mumbai. Managed to get half price compared to the first place I asked. Though still only DKK 50 (AUD 12) for a 1½ hour taxi ride. I took the pleasure and paid the DKK 10 extra to get aircon.

Merde the streets even in downtown looked like shit, I relaxed when I saw the façade of the Hotel, which actually was the only okay looking building in the street.

After the compulsory eat all those weird things at the breaky buffet so you don’t have to eat any of the stuff they are selling in the street trick, I was searching for a running gear shop. Got set with running gear, but what the F&$#, running was like being a monkey in the Zoo. Everybody looked strange at you and you even got some cheering here and there.

Got a private tour around town for 3 hours, with my personal guide and taxi driver. Total costs 2000 Rps. Around 250DKK or 55 AUD, including map, water, fresh fruit and fresh coconut juice not bad at all. Even checked out the House of Gandi and checked out Holly cows!

Noosa:

Another 10 hours drive from Dubbo, and a left turn in Brissy yep there you find Sunshinebeach. Nice place to hang out. Classic Australien winter with 20 degrees, nice cafés and good surf.

JWOC Dubbo:

Just a small walkabout! 9 hours drive from Melbourne and we arrived in Dubbo 2 am in the morning. Dubbo was cold, great granite terrain, good spirit and yep outback NSW! Good stuff it’s not as bad as those real outback NSW towns were all you can get at the Café has to be fried! Hoggster and AceJase did a fantastic job with the speaking, and AceJase it was top dollar with your Hot Choco machine in the Kitchen!

Ran the NSW Long Champs, Western Plains Carnival and AUS Long and Relay champs. Maps and splits can be found here

Tokyo - Japan

Tokyo… welcome to the high-tech and high efficiency world. Then how can it be so hard to find an address, well they use there own strange system. I didn’t help when the local couldn’t help, one fellow answered in perfect English “I don’t speak English” sure mate. Knew it was within 3 min. walk from Ginza Metro station but it still took me 25 min to find the Hotel.

But the hotels are nice, and they got heaps of ‘toys’ …. Massage bench, electronic air freshener, computer, multi functional toilet (Heat, wash function… you name it). No bible but the handy guide to Buddhism was in the drawer. And not at least a Danish telephone!

Next morning as an appetiser my morning jog took me around the fish market, so I was pumped for some sushi for breakfast. Some groovy Breakfast it was, and I planned to tru it all. This included specialties as Rice porridge, rice soup, rice crackers, rice… Sushi, seaweed, 5 different coloured fruit juices. Even the waitress smiled due to all the empty plates at my table.

Else had to do the compulsory Temples, River cruise, Museums and Danish cafes?!?! Anyway nice to know you can always go to ‘the Danish café’ or ‘Andersen café’ if you need a Hot Choco and a cake.

16-06-07 Jukola - Lapua Finland

Groovy, no mosquitos, no rain, super terrain.. yea
After a miserable WC charge in Lapua, a visit to the Jukola training terrain was need, and it was great navigation.

Pan Kristianstads team was:
1 -  Jakob Lööf            - 40
2 - Simon Svensson      - 27
3 - Johan Modig           - 49
4 - Jakob Svensson      - 53
5 -  Rasmus Søes         - 35
6 -  Rune Olsen            - 35
7 - Andrej Khramov     - 28

Looked god on the paper, but ’as usual’ Pan had trouble getting the good flow at Jukola. Waked up at 0:20 for breaky before another little 2 hour nab. Got out to the arena around 2:50 and it was light, in fact it was never really dark.

A started out a little too fast and made an error on the first control. Told myself to concentrate and found a good flow. Made some small stupid mistakes, like memorising the wrong control code so had to go back and running 90 degrees out of a wrong track. Again I lost the concentration on the second last and ended to high. Should have ran 5-6 min faster. We ended at 28 a little better than last year’s 34’Th place. Good thing though was our second team which did a very good job in the beginning and ended 61 compared to 145 last year.

After resting, babe spotting, sunbathing until 12:30 it was time for another go in the forest. Why not the babes were gone and the bus would not leave before 16:00. Great fun to run around checking out the massive new track system, and seeing the local mechanic and checkout clerk trying to find the controls!

14-06-07 World Cup - Lapua Finland

Qualification

Was focused on doing the navigation job in the beginning and try to push the speed in the easy part. But… missed the first control, ran down to the right cliff but didn’t see the control as it was parked at the side of the cliff. Ran a little around before I hit the control from the other side and saw the control…great start. Did some good splits on the next couple of controls. Lost time on 12 and on 14 as I didn’t see the control on the map before I had past it (was right on the line from 13-15, though bad excuse – just showing that I didn’t focus enough on navigation). Ended on a poor 31’st place.

B-Final

Really easy start, first challenge was control 10…Planned to take it safe going left of the ponds. Though the control was not exactly where I wanted it (and where most runners wanted it) so did a loop. Lost the focus and lost time on 11 and 14 and the second last. All in all another poor race navigation wise. Hope I had some speed, but due to a dead EMIT unit I didn’t get any split.

Tiomila

Yea... ready set go!

Tiomila ready we are:

  1 - night  11,950 Jacob Lööf
  2 - night  14,160 Rasmus Søes
  3 - night    7,310 Erik Modig
  4 - night  16,470 Rune Olsen
  5 - night    7,220 Jakob Modig
  6 - dawn 10,400 Henrik Tryggeson
  7 - day    11,490 Johan Modig
  8 - day      9,480 Simon Svensson
  9 - day      5,560 Frederik Persson
10 - day    16,800 Andrey Khramov

Started perfectly with Jacob in with teten on first leg. Lost some time and places on the 2'nd and 3'rd, so I started out on the long night leg as 23 and 8.11 behind MS Parma.

Started out well, and caught some people before the first railway crossing. Did a mistake on 6'th control and lost the pack. Got a good rhythm over the next couple of legs and caught up again on the long leg. Did well and the legs felt okay until the first after the crossing where I got lost in the small track and decided to just ran for the paddock. From here i missed the control and spend around 5 min running around. Did some other small mistakes on the last loop, and lost around 8 min to the leaders. Crap! felt good running but the mistakes in the end was just not good enough.

We finished 18'th after a great run by Johan on 7'th which lifted the game.

Jukola watch out!

22-04-07 NOC enough? I might be born under a lucky star…

NOC Middle distance trial Boafall Västra 5,7 km 205m climb

Yesterday showed that I didn’t have the speed in the tough terrain, but managed good splits in the fast terrain and on the roads.

The plan was to go out and fight, and focus on the navigation, no reading ahead! And stop at each control before exiting. Good a good flow and tried to make it easy where possible. Ran more or less clean to control 9 and were leading at this stage. Made a 2 minute mistake at control 10, were really close and had to make the fly in the bottle to find the control… 2min down! Got stressed and lost the focus on the safe navigation, and tried to catch up the lost time. BAD decision made a BIG error on 16’th (5½ min and it was game over).

The good thin is that it seem like the speed it coming back to my legs and I can handle ‘light’ terrain. The lesson taken… 2 weeks of good training, showing that I need more training in tough terrain, and I have to focus on the navigation when I get stressed.

I have to be lucky to get a spot at NOC. Now it time to focus on Tiomila… that the way!

21-04-07 NOC Long distance Trials Boafalls Backa 14,2 k 360m climb.
It has been a tight ‘run-up’ for this trials due to sickness from end February to the start of April.

The last 2 weeks I have tried hard to get some speed into the legs again, and I have only done one longer hill run to get some terrain feeling. Therefore it was with an untested body on the start line for the long distance trials.

Planed to push hard and see how much in the tank. Was a bit wobbly in the beginning and took a bad ‘in reality’ route choice to the second control and then I was 3½ min behind. The terrain was tougher than expected and I had a hard time getting on top of the terrain. The terrain got more runable half way through and the was a bit of ‘road running’ which suited me better. though only managed an average puls of 166 should be around 175.

Were more than 6½ min down on Chris Terkelsen at the finish line, with most time list in the beginning. Shouldn’t get too scared NOC shouldn’t be anything like this. A good race tomorrow and it’s all sweet.

14-04-07 to 15-04-07 Problems with the throat again Monday this week, so no training and light training on Tuesday. Did some good sessions Wednesday & Thursday. So were looking forward for two good races. this weekend.

Vildmarksfejden - Middle distance (Saturday morning)
Tried to push from the beginning but lacked the float in the navigating in the first part of the course. Speeded up in the end and managed some good splits. nice to know the legs are getting better and better for each day.'

Did a great training at Degeberga in the arvo, the terrain was much better than I remembered it. A nice run in the sun.

Göingefejden - Middle distance (Sunday  morning)
Tried to get a good rhythm in the navigation in the beginning, managed until the first long leg where I took a poor route choice. Made some mistakes in the end, but worst of all the legs were slow even though I tried to push. The Saturday afternoon training must have been a bit too much at this stage.

Another great weekend, where Rasmus and I, again got great service at Åhus Strandhotel.... to be recommended

Just a short visit on the way...sorry couldn't help it

05-04-07 to 08-04-07 7-Manna, Tio-night training and Kolmårdskavlen
After an average of 2½ hours of good training the last 3 days the program was set for a few relays and relevant night traing for Tiomila around Stigtomta in Sweden. Did a twist of my right ankle on the first training on the training camp in North Jutland with the DK National team. But the use of heaps of sports tape did the job and I could still run orienteering when I was cautious in the terrain.

7-Manna
Ran the 3'rd leg, the longest night leg. After running intervals in the morning I didn't expect to be flying, which for sure wasn't the case. Tried to push the speed on the roads but didn't have the 'kick' in the legs. Made some smaller mistakes here and the and a 3 min mistake in the end. The gap of 10 min. to the leading teams were a bit more than I expected, but the last 5 days with good training and two competitions made it tough.

Kolmårdskavlen
Had a late night pass the day before so spend some time warming up getting the body up to speed. Rasmus did a good job on the first leg and I started out with the leading pack. The legs were much better than expected and I could keep the same pace as the leaders. Did a poor route choice and lost the pack. I'm happy to know that the training seems to do it's job, I might be okay next w-end.

Training Camp and B-day:
Celebrating Ramus Søes Birthday an early morning with an Easter bunny, before we rushed to the forest for a training before heading home to DK.

31-03-07 to 01-04-07 Danish Champs
As I could still feel the cold/flue in the beginning of the week the program was no training or light training.
Therefore I needed to get some training in the book, to get ready or as ready as I can get to the NOC trials, I did some fast sessions Friday and Saturday morning.

Night Champs Holstenshus 31-03-07
Didn't feel super peak so just tried to get around in a decent time, and get some competition feeling into the body. Ended 4'th both that was only due to the lack of competition

Sprint champs Kolding 01-04-07
Slept like crap as the local soccer boys came back after hitting the town at 2am, 3am, 4am....
Anyway the legs could feel the k's from the night champs and there was no kick to get them going in to high speed. Tried hard to maintaine a decent pace and lost the focus on the navigation. The result say it all.

Spring Cup - Roskilde

Unfortunately not at all as funny as I thought a month ago. Started on the Classic but didn't feel ready and had to bail out. Therefore I was only spectating on Sunday to see Pan Kristianstad, finishing third.

Martin Kronlund Trophy - Peguerinos (Spain)

Been sick for a while, but felt better by the end of the week. Arrived in Madrid Friday evening, for a charge around the Barajas Airport.
Settled at for the night at El Escorial.

Long distance - Peguerinos:
Arrived a bit late even after a hard charge up the hill in the Renault Megane, even lost a wheel cup. Managed to just arrive at the start 2 to min in advance. The legs were feeling a bit under pressure on the longer up-hill sections and in the end they were just tired. Did a reasonable job navigating.

The sandwiches and hot choco after the race made up for it ...mmm....

Trained in the Hills around the Camp ground in the middle of the forest, groovy terrain!
check out the videos.

almost out ran the Lasagne prepared on a saucepan due to lack of an oven!

Middle distance - Peguerinos:
Tried to give it a go! but the legs were still not super duper. The navigation was falling apart ½ way through the course.
Checking the results the speed was not totally hopeless in the beginning, but there is still some to work on.

Felt heaps better in the body just after 2 days in the warm weather in Spain, this might be the turning point yea!

22-02-07 Snowing it is!

Groovy, enough snow to go skiing. Out on the golf course with headlamp in a strong wind. Survived 1 hour 13 minutes in the freezing wind.

Managed another 2 hours 19 on the cross-x skies the following day...

Unfortunately also managed to get a flue....merde!

28-01-07

Training as usual in DK
Back on track, did my first 10k race since the overtraining in late 2005. Managed to do 32:36 on a windy course in my Debut in the lion uniform from ‘Blovstrød Løverne’. Am happy about the time though the goal was sub 32:30, no worries that will come.

Snow! Yippie!
BUT – not enough to put on the skies booh. Anywas saddled up on the bike for a nice ride… Went down to Step and Deep for some ‘I have to survive the cold weater in DK’ gearing up shop, Thanks Lars for the service >;-)

Cruised around the awesome white landscape and checked out the deer’s in Dyrehaven. Then it’s fun to train!

02-01-07 to 08-01-07

Australia - Good to be back mate!
‘how is it to be back home mate?’ just one of few txt messages from friends Down under. Wow, I have missed this place a lot, it actually make me feel home! Awesome to get a meat pie, Choco liquorish bullets, Choco hot Cross Buns, fresh watermelon …have to write TimTams’ as well.

Was Buggered after the night leg from HK to Sydney. Cruised a around Balls Head (sprint event). The good thing was that I had plenty of time to check out the Harbour bridge and the Sydney Opera from the course! Nice!

Got a Meat pie at Catoomba after checking out the three sister… haven’t moved since last time I was around! Damn outback NSW is hot, what a change from HK and DK.

Great to run around in the granite again, though wasn’t to focused on the first day around Orange. Only did a good job on the 2’day winning the mass start after being 1½ min down on Shep and Carsten J. do brain malfunction at the fourth control.

Crashed and burned on the 3.day, ran out of gas on the 4’th and tried hard on the 5’th as I won the race last time I ran around Mcquiry Woods. A bad route choice and a small mistake and three fast guys running together didn’t give me a chance. The maps have been uploaded.

Had a great time in Oz, for sure ‘I’ll be back’

26-12-06 to 01-01-06

APOC & Hong Kong Champs
Skyscrapers, Rolls Roys, Money, Scenic views, New Years celebration and shitty terrain!

Hong Kong got it all, maybe except the awesome orienteering terrain. To avoid been beaten by my mom I arrived in Hong Kong in the arvo on December 26’th. After sucking in the vibe and enjoying the skyline on Hong Kong island I thought I was ready for the Hong Kong Night Champs…

Hong Kong Night Champs
Welcome to the Jungle everybody! Yep ‘it a jungle out there’, and HK is suppose to have some nasty snakes around.  It was a 75 mins score event and it took around 23 sec to discover that Green means no go! And small tracks / paths means.. ‘I should have taken my machete along!’ Ended up doing some speed sessions around the ‘park’ on tracks and in concrete watercourses. Ended up with most points (around 285) though a fellow orienteer from Tyrving ended up -285 cause showing up too late at the finish.

Macao – Casino, Portugese and Casino….
The small county (even smaller than HK) can be reached by fast ferry from HK in just over an hour…. For most people, the boat I chose got in trouble with some floating garbage, and had to return so my trip took around to hours…. The compensation was an Ice Cream and a drink… not much compared to the stakes at rhe Casinos in Town.

Victoria Peak - HK
If you are in HK don’t miss out the view from the peak. Looks absolutely awesome at night. Did a run from my hotel at the harbour front, to the top, a 500m climb. Lucky me they are serving Hot Choco at the peak station, though there another 100m climb to the top.

APOC
Sprint was held in a park on the Hong Kong ‘main land’. This was the first time ever I experienced a sprint start to go over 5 hours… Anyway I was slipping around in my normal runners and ended 2’nd.

Long and Middle, was in a similar area. High grass, covering Zillions of small rocks and possible heaps of snakes, to spice it up a bit there was some good handfuls of thick green patches. Ended up ‘jogging’ around after a guy just before I had to go to the start told me about the APOC relay, where to Chinese girls broke there legs and had to be rescued, and even better it was shown on telly in the evening…. Year I’m ready to rumble in the junge?!

The Only good thing I can come up with about the terrain was the awesome view! Check it out!

New Years
Lucky me a Danish expatriates from PwC is on a secondment in HK. So celebrated New Years on an Italian restaurant with a couple of Danes and 18 million Chinese People.

New year new club!
Have decided to run for Pan Kristianstad (SWE) in 2007 after two years with FarumTisvilde OK.

Pan is not new to me as I was running for them in 2003 and 2004. It a great club with a good atmosphere. The big motivators for the club change has been new surroundings, new challenges and therefore new and more motivation.

Had a good day training in Åhus this Saturday as well.

I’m looking forward to the new season, it going to be awesome!

"
I hope your wearing your fire-proof O suit, cause I'm gonna be burning through that forest!"

10-11-06 to 12-11-06

Trondheim, Norway
Have always wanted to go to Trondheim and what better occasion than O-Day can come up?

O-day might be ‘Mecca’ for Orienteers… and you have to go at least once in your life? Were hoping that the trip would give me an opportunity to go skiing after a 1½ year drought. Unfortunately the snow conditions were not too good so had to enjoy the terrain by foot. A few colourful photos have been uploaded.

21-10-05

Blodslitet, Frederiksstad Norway 21-10-06
After a couple of days not feeling superb, I decided to start and give it a go. The initial plan was to do the loops and see how I felt. I got in trouble from the start as I lost time on the first control (2min). Luckily I was not the only one, so I didn’t have to run the rest of the course by myself. After the three loops I was feeling okay and spotted a group just ahead of me. I decided to give it a go and speeded up to get contact. ‘Rode’ with the group for the rest of the course, though I was feeling necked in the end but still managed a decent 23’rd spot.

Though the biggest mistake was that I went to the party in the evening, given my poor conditions. The result was that I got really sick again…bugger!

A few photos and maps have been uploaded.

16-10-06 to 20-10-06

Autumn Training centre - Mysen Norway 16-10-06 to 20-10-06
Spend the autumn break in Norway training in the forest around Mysen. Didn’t have the weather with us, but it doesn’t matter as soon you start running in the forest. Unfortunately I got in trouble with my throat and therefore couldn’t train as much as I liked.

15-10-06

Tunevannet Rundt - Sapsborg Norway 15-10-06
The early start on the autumn break included a ‘long’ distance race in Sarpsborg - Norway. After an eventually nice sleep in ‘Old Einerbu’ in Mysen, after we had struggled with the fireplace and drunken Norwegian ladies begging for autographs, we were lucky to find the competition area before the start. It was a mass start race and Rasmus Søes and I (only Danes around) did a good job in the beginning and got a 30 sec gap on the way to the 2’nd control. Though I stuffed up the 3 control with 2 minutes, and had to speed up to catch the pack again which I did around control 8. The end of the course included two times 1½-2k racing on asphalt ‘down town’. Unfortunately a bad route choice in the end meant that we were 2’nd and 4’Th.

28-09-06 to 01-10-06

Euromeeting - Gdynia
Back in the Red & white Jersey, after a couple of years more related to Green & Gold.
As a big surprise for everyone the competition only included Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Poland. Anyway, I didn’t matter too much as all the Nordic countries were represented so there was good competition.

Program:
Sprint, Long and Relay

After an early start and loooong road trip to Poland via Germany and especially the old East German ‘Hitler’ Freeway gave us a late arrival in G’dansk. Still enough time for a ‘jog’ around Sopot, the uptown area in G’dansk.

Did a light training session Friday morning in similar terrain as the Long dist should be held in. ‘Easy Gully spur’ terrain with a few green areas. Still have some trouble with my left Achilles, but it didn’t bugger me too much.

Sprint:
Did a good warm-up to get the Achilles' tendon in to speed. Were feeling okay in the beginning and the speed wasn’t too bad and navigated well until the 5’th last control (Control 10) where I totally lost the bearing. Not sure if that have to do anything with the Norwegian chicks jumping around in the forest or the fact that I was stupid. Ended slightly off the map and lost 3 good minutes => it was Game Over. It didn’t make it better that I lost ½ of my left shoe in the forest!

Had some strange pain in my tights more precisely in the muscle on the outer side of the leg, after the race. Couldn’t hardly warm-down. No idea where it came from… maybe the long journey on the Hitler road! Did some wicked stretching in the arvo and crossed my fingers!

Long:
Struggled with getting started, soar muscles in the tights and a soar left Achilles' tendon. Managed to get the legs rolling, and kept a decent pace from the beginning. Were feeling okay running but made a route choice mistake on a long leg in the end and climbed an additional 50m and lost 2 minutes. Made some smaller mistakes as well which added up to around 2 minutes. Were around 6 minutes behind, which probably match my not superb training state at the moment.

Relay:
Same forest as for long. Ran 2’nd leg, going out in the lead with a pack of four people. The pack kept an okay pace in the beginning. No controls were missing as it was the case for the females first leg. Even though there were big differences in the forking the group was together until the last forking. Had a long forking and lost sight of the pack and finished around 1½ minutes behind. Finished 4’th overall, not too bad but not as good as we were hoping for.

Maps, results and a few photos have been uploaded.

10-09-2006 Danish Long distance Champs - Borupskovene
No too much brushed back today more like a setback!
The left Achilles was in big trouble this morning. Struggled big time already on the way to the start. Started easy and tiptoed – stepped like a dwarf around the course made some smaller mistakes in the diffuse areas.

After the torture today I might jump on the garden gate for the next couple of days to give the achillis some rest. Ended 11’th 10mins behind. What a crap day!

Maps and results have been uploaded

09-09-2006 Danish Champion in Relay (Same forest used for EOC relay in 2004)
Ran first leg, was feeling okay and had good control with the navigation. Struggled a bit on the roads but was feeling much better in the terrain.
Thought I was in the lead at the spectator but Pan Århus (Claus Block) was 1 min ahead. Changed over as 2/3 1 min behind. Thomas did well and changed over to Jamie again one min behind Pan Århus. Jamie caught Pan Århus (Rene Rokkjær) and managed to get away on the last gafling.

Tisvilde Hegn OK won in 2005 with
 - Michael Sørensen
 -  Jesper D. Jensen
 -  Carsten Jørgensen

Yep we could do it again without any repetitions in the team? yep!
 - Rune Olsen
 - Thomas Jensen
 - Jamie Stevenson

Tisvilde Hegn OK is therefore the most successful Danish relay club in recent times with 6 Gold over the last 11 years

Back to DK and preparation for WOC:
Felt good returning from Oz, and were confident that I got what it takes. Showed form in the elite races and had trained well over the last two month. Everything seemed to go wrong after Jukola. Got sick and struggled 1½ week without proper training or any training at all. Then I made the first mistake as I tried to catch up the lost training. Did 2 orienteering trainings a day and a lot of speed work and I was feeling better and better.

The next drawback came when I helped my sister move to 4’th floor in an old flat without lift. Carried 25 boxes up the stairs and after orienteering intervals in the arvo my calves got really tired on the warm down, a light stage of ‘overtraining’. Decided to go to Lithuania just to do something different and get away from home as well as get plenty of time to recover and take it easy. At the same time JWOC (my first) was good fun with both medals to Australia and Denmark my two ‘home’ countries.

After some good massage and spa in Lithuania, I tried to get ready by doing to speed sessions in the week leading up to the selection races. The rest of the week was all about resting the legs and I got some massage as well.

Sprint – Universitetsparken Esbjerg:
Was not to sure about my speed, but it seemed to be all right. Made a bad route choice to the 1'st control and lost about 25 sec. (thought I missed maybe 5-10 sec). Speeded up and won the next 3 splits so the speed was there. One bad route choice to 12'th and a two small mistakes in the end pushed me down the result list to where it’s not that fun to be.

Middle – Hjermind Egekræt:
Felt confident that I could do it on the Middle with a good race. Were drifting a little too much to the left on the first leg and was sure lost at least 20sec. (but didn’t lose much). Planned to take the easy route choice to the 2'nd control, going round on the track to the right. Tried to cut the corner and somehow I must have exited the gully in the wrong direction and I drifted out the wrong spur. Didn’t realise it before I saw the pit. Went well from here, but had a small time loss on 10. Going out of 12’th I realised that 13’th looked tricky and therefore I slowed down, but somehow I ended up on the wrong spur anyway. Lost some time to 15 as the yellow was really bad (had checked the SUI trials the week before and a guy went through therefore I took that route choice). Legs were feeling tired in the hill, and the speed was still a little bit behind the best but the mistakes made the difference.

Long – Frisenborg skovene:
Knew it was going to get tough as the course was 15,6k with 800m climb. At the Danish
champs in 2003 in the same forest the course was 15,2k with 550m climb and the winning time was 98mins. Started confident and with good speed was feeling okay up the hills as well. Caught a guy with 2mins at the 1'st control (he is in the Ukraine team for the WOC!). Lost a little bit on 2'nd going straight. Felt well over the first part of the course, first time I could feel the hills were on the way to 7’Th. I continued pushing and tried to keep a good pace. Got into trouble at 21'st when found my self a little high and decided to
run along the field, unfortunately there were a lot of undergrowth and I was starting  getting tired and lost some time (just over a minute). Were 7'th overall but only a min after no. 3 and still ahead of Jamie Stevenson (the winner). Made the first real mistake on 25 as I was getting tired I was trying to avoid the hills but more or less did the opposite. From here on I was running on fumes and lost around 4-5 mins over the last couple of controls.

WOC / WOC Tour:
Maybe I missed out on the WOC but I still have to go and check it out. The organisers needed some elite runners to help out with the TV production. This included free entry to the WOC-Tour and first parquet to the WOC show.Even after some horrible selection races and some ’tough’ recovery to get on top again, running in awesome terrain around Silkeborg, I can’t stop training in the forest and especially orienteering! I love it too much! It’s awesome!

Performed okay the first 3 days (3’rd, 2’nd and 1’st). After a pool party Wednesday evening, the lack of rest kicked in and there were not too much power in the tank the last three days.

Looking forward!
The next aim is the Danish Champs with the Middle distance here in the end of August and the Relay and long in the start of September. The calves are feeling better and better and hopefully I can battle for medals at the Danish Champs.

16-06-2006 Forsa Games & Jukola

Forsa games:
Tough terrain had problems with keeping up the speed. Got caught with one minute at second control without making any mistakes. Made a few mistakes later on an lost around 3 min. The legs are not yet up to speed and it took away some of the focus which should be on the navigation.

Jukola
The legs were not feeling brilliant before the races. But as usual when it counts they were all good. When out alone 17 minutes behind as 186 as FarumTisvildes 1. leg lost a lot of time one the 3. last control. Were focus on the navigation in the beginning. Slacked the navigation a bit when started see more people around an lost some stupid minutes on the controls in a row. Got the focus back on my own navigation and did a good job until the 3. lost 2½ min on the leg but still gained on place!
Good to feel the legs are back on track pick 106 places, but still made to many mistakes after 'relying' to much on the people around me. It was a shame we couldn't keep up in the beginning and that we made too many mistakes. FarumTisvilde ended as 35'th, no doubt there are room for improvement.

Photos added, maps to come shortly.

10-06-2006 Danish Park Tour - Skåde just south of the WOC capital Århus.
Was more than normal tired with only 3 hours of sleep the night before, after playing fire fighter and partying with my colleagues from PwC in Copenhagen
Sprint 1
Tried to keep a good pace in the first race without going 100%. Didn't lose much time and were still around a minute behind.
Sprint 2
Even though the legs were still tired I tried to push a little bit harder, and was able to match the speed of Rene and Claus. Made one mistake on 14'th and lost 40 sec.

Middle Distance Grund.
A classic forest with some nice areas but also some areas with the lot! stinging nettles and blackberries. The legs were better than expected. Lost some timing trying to avid the stinging nettles and mucked up control 13 and lost time on going straight to 15.

08-06-2006 Denmark it is!
Back to the Danish summer, sunshine and 20-28 degrees.
Had a nice training in Tisvilde Hegn, where I was setting out stands for race this weekend. Super nice open fast terrain. Didn't go fast though as I had to carry 13 stands. Still tired after sitting in a plane for 30 hours. Still haven't seen anything to luggage since LA.

03-06-2006 NZ Queens birthday
Still trying to figure out how it can be that the Queen is born on different days in NZ and AUS!

Four races in two days in the area north of Auckland and straight back to Melbourne to catch a plane early Monday morning to Denmark via LA, JFK and Zurich

Saturday:
Middle distance Shanks's Pony - Open grass land with gullies with jungle and tracks with deep mud yea!
The legs felt tired after travelling all Friday, though still tried to push fairly hard. Made one mistake (40 sec control 3) and two not optimal route choices (60 secs). Finished fourth just behind a couple of Kiwis.

Sprint Albany Uni - Awful start with a 15 sec time loss on second control as I expected the control was located on the upper level instead of on the lower level. lost another 15 sec on the route choice to 5. Managed to keep a good pace in the rest of the course and made up the time loss to finish just 3 sec ahead of Chris Forne.

Sunday:
Two middle distance races in Otakanini Topu - Sand dune terrain in the Woodhill forest.

AM - Got a god flow in the beginning and the legs were feeling fine. Read a depression as a hill on the way to 8'th and lost some time. Stuffed it up on 11'th after loosing control halfway through the leg. Cruised the rest of the course.

PM - Was ready to redeem my self from the poor performance in the morning. The race was a chasing start so caught a lot of people just after the first control. Had a good flow until a small mistake at 8'th. Was careful in the low visibility pinafores in the end and managed to get through with out any major mistakes even though the map seem to be weird.

28-05-2006 Eppalock South - Last race in Australia for now
Time To redeem my self after the disaster in my first Aussie bush event in 2004, where I crashed and burned´ at Eppalock with a broken compass, and a miss punch.

Was focused on the good navigation experience and got a good flow. Took some defensive route choices in the beginning. Had problem with control 8 and 14.

Happy to be able to notice my improvement in the vague gully spur terrain with a substantial win compared to a mispunch and 15 min time loss.

21-05-2006 Orange elite races
Middle Distance
Fast open pine forest, with a few hill here and there (180m climb). The start was a little bit rushed, so cruised to the first couple of controls to get into the map, before tried to push a bit harder. Only minor mistakes on 7, 12 and 18. Pushed fairly hard in the hills, and managed to finished first in front of Troy and the rest of the Australian WOC team and Grant.

Long Distance
Total different terrain. Just south of the area to be used for JWOC in 2007 around Dubbo in NSW. A lot of Hills, small boulders on the ground, fallen Trees and spider webs! Started last but still a lot of webs and crap in the forest. Were concentrated in the beginning and had okay contact with the map. Lost a lot of time on control 4, were searching 50m to high on a spur with a lot of rocks, thought I saw the bare rock running across the hill side. Had to run to the top of the hill to relocate. Rushed the navigation on the next couple of legs and made some good mistakes. The legs was feeling good in the tough terrain but managed to keep a good speed.

Both map have been uploaded.

18-05-2006 Sprint Training Canberra
Grant had put together 3 good sprint trainings in Canberra on Thursday (one) and Friday (two)

The Thursday sprint was at Canberra uni. Ran with headlamp on the fast course among the buildings. Managed to run the course the wrong way around.

The two sprint on Thursday was respectively in forest and park / Uni. Was feeling a bit tired in the last sprint, but great training, good work Grant!

Tassie and Canberra
After a hard training weekend with the tough Tassie girls in Hobart last weekend, the training the comming weekend is scheduled for Canberra.

Two great training weekends and a few more to come in Australia & New Zealand. Looking forward for the next couple of weeks training to get more power into the legs.

Canberra

Lynham (Friday)
An easy run in the park! Can still be amazed with the ease the kangaroos can jump a 1.5 meter high fences, just look so easy.

Ballinafad Creek (Saturday)
Cruised around at Ballinafad Creek with Shep to put out tapes for a coming event. Open terrain with some fair hills, topped with the first 50 termite mounts (Map uploaded).

Sparrow Hill (Sunday morning)
The setup up on Sunday was for CHAOS orienteering. Four loops of 1.6 km to 1.6 km in the Sparrow Hills pine forest. A good navigation & speed session, though found the CHAOS at the end of the last loop! (Maps uploaded)

Honeysuckle Creek (Sunday evening)
Detailed granite terrain used for the WC middle distance final in 2000.
The run ability was not that great due to a lot of sticks merely spread over most of the forest. Figured out how some of the big guns could lose 17 minutes on one control, when touched the edge of the map!

04-05-2006

Tassie:

Cascade Breweries: (Friday morning)
Checked out the site of the Cascade brewery on an easy morning jog before cruised down town for breaky and hot choco!

Hobart SW - Upper reservoir (Friday afternoon)
Did a run with a bit more speed in the afternoon, the legs was pulling up well.

Capes Pillar (Saturday – all day)
The locals (Hanny and Grace) had persuaded the foreigner to do a long scenic run on the south eastern tip of the Tasman Peninsula. As we got moving the weather got better and we could enjoy the scenic coast line in sunshine and merely 12 degrees. Was happy about the recovery snack in the backpack as the tank needed to be refuelled after a couple of hours out there. Finish with 5 hours and 20 minutes I the training diary with at least 1,900m of climb. That qualifies as a good days of training.

Check out the photos here.

4 Peaks (Sunday)
The menu on Sunday was the Four Peaks race. A terrain run over four peaks with around a 1000m climb at the north eastern edge of Hobart with start and finish at the Risdon Brook Dam. Certainly I could feel the long run the day before, but the legs were surprisingly good. Keep a good speed over the hills and have to give it a fair go to follow Hanny’s pace. Check the results here.

22-04-2006 Australian Middle Distance Championships
Almost there, but lost the podium on the 2'nd last control. Kept a good pace even though was feeling week. Had a good 'sector' after a time loss on 6'th and got fastest splits from 6-11 and took over the lead on 12'th control. A time loss on 15'th and the second last though ruined the race. Check out the awesome Korong Spur terrain, neighbour terrain to Mt. Kooyoora used for WOC 1985 classic distance

14-04-2006 Easter 3-Days

After a week with a light flue Easter started with a prologue Friday afternoon:
Prologue: tiered legs and lack of focus on navigation => poor performance
Day 1: "Tricky" gully spur terrain, good legs but slackly navigation => poor performance
Day 2: Superb terrain (WOC Relay 1985), decent legs and decent navigation skills => approved performance
Day 3: A little tired legs with good focus on navigation => approved performance

See maps, results and more comments under "competitions" -> here

Next challenge -> AUS middle distance Champs Saturday 22 April.

02-04-2006 Easter is looming!
After 1½ week with the flue I'm back in Business and the focus have been on navigation in Gully Spur and Goldmining, and fast training sessions (intervals and Distance training).

- 02/04 2006 State League Creswick Diggings, middle distance in Gold mining.
- 01/04 2006 Training Castlemaine - Chewton Diggings, a map with rocks and goldmining a nice terrain, and Crocodile Reservoir traditional gully spur terrain. Still plenty of water out there but no Crocs in sight! buh!
- 25/03 2006 Training Castlemaine on Smith reef
Gully Spur terrain, trying to get a hang of it. Did a couple of runs without compass to force myself to focus entirely on contours.

- 24/03 Crocodile Reservoir (Gully Spur). A after work training Friday evening around Castlemaine. Trying to learn from one of the old folks in the business Mr. Key

11-03-2006 First Races of the year - Australian National League in Bigga NSW

Bigga equals good granite terrain around 9 hours drive from Melbourne. The program for the weekend was:
- Sprint Saturday morning
- Middle Distance Saturday Afternoon
- Long Distance Sunday Morning

Race Comments:

After an easy training month of January 2006 due to potential overtraining in early December 2005, the training is back to speed. After a good nights sleep in Canberra (though a little to short) and Breaky with a Birthday kid the first race was in sight.

Sprint:
Last starter in the sprint...(yep that's how the treat the AUS sprint Champ!). Was uncertain about my fitness after a week where I was feeling really bad. Tried to loosen up the legs with a massage Friday morning, though the verdict from the masseur was 'your legs feel really inflamed' great I'm ready to race!

Therefore I started 'easy' and focused on the navigation. The easy start let me in to 8'position after 5 controls. From the 5'th to the finished I increased the pace an gained 5 positions to end 3'rd overall, behind fellow FarumTisvilde club mate David Schneider and runner up Julian Dent.

Medium Distance:
The heat is on! Started second in the field in the 30+ degrees. My head was cooking and I missed the start triangle which was taped to a rock?!?! Hence a 1 min loss to the first control. On the way to the 3'rd control I was reading on the wrong leg and ran toward control 10 on top of the hill instead of around (which become the decisive factor for me in the races). The same mistake was made one the way to no.6 and again towards control 10 which was fatal as I omitted it in and diverted to control 11.

The race though showed me that my speed was up there not too far from normal, as the result based on times without time loss would put me into second spot behind Julian Dent. An the splits shows three best splits and another 5 top 3 splits.

Long Distance:
This was the distance I was most worried about as the majority of my endurance training have been on bike.
For that reason the initial pace was moderate with the 450 meters of climb to go. A miss interpretation of the route to 3'control set me 2 minutes back. Time loss on 13, 14 and 15 sat me back another couple of mins, as well as the defensive route choice to the second last control was mercilessness. The speed though showed that the legs had a tough time in the heat after a bad week and two races the day before.

Map and splits to be found in the 'orienteering' section.

06-03-2006 Birthday in da' House
The writer celebrated the birthday in Kew with a MFR run and Danish 'Lagkage' Elephant beer and 'Gammel Dansk'. Photos to be found in the photo gallery

04-03-2006 The drought is over the Orienteering season is rolling!

The first Orienteering training camp of the year took place in the small Victorian town of Beechworth. Four times running Orienteering in a weekend a great start to the season. The area offered nice terrain with granite and some areas with a Norwegian touch.

25-02-2006 MTB-O Daylesford

First MTB-O race since the WOC in Ballarat in late 2004. The map reading in the beginning showed that the technic was long forgotten.

Middle Distance Saturday:
After a start where I had difficulties reading the map on the go and hence made a couple of smaller mistakes, I got the control back. Though the race finished suddenly when I punctured on the way to the 12'th control and with out a spare tube I was a long walk back.

Long Distance Sunday:
After having trouble finding the start, I didn't take long before I was in trouble again. The toe clip on my left shoe felt of. From there the ride got a little bumpy, and a bad route choice (straight) to control 5 was setting me back a couple of minutes. When the Power disappeared from the legs in the end the mistakes was looming, and a few detours was in sight.

All in all a good weekend, but without the result to take back home.

Map and splits to be found in the 'orienteering' section.

05-02-2006 Kathmandu Adventure Race - Yarra Bend Park

Melbourne Forest Racers, were represented with two team to go through adventures in Kayak. on Bike and with running shoes. The Liggo-RunO due struggled a bit with getting the Kayak Seaborn and lost some time but advanced up through the field to be second just 1 min of the lead at the last checkpoint less than 500m from the finish. A lost clue sheet and lousy memory to remember we have to look for letters written on a bridge instead of a date coursed a 3 min break. We were overtaken by the second MFR team with Dion and Simon and ended third, but still a good day for MFR.

Thanks To The Famous Melbourne Bicycle Centre for Gearing us up before the race!

19-01-06 Hideaway in the Vic Alps
While it was a real stinker in Melbourne with 43 Degrees, it was perfect conditions for running and biking at Falls Creek in the altitude of 1585m. The temperature was more moderate with 26 on Saturday and 32 on Sunday.

The pack was made up of: Troysi
e, Tom Q, David Schneider, Liggo, Jymbo and the Viking.

But the Dane had to learn it the hard way biking in 1800m for 2h+ in the sun. Even with European sunscreen with factor 30, legs and arms were changing colour to red.

Back in Melbourne at 8pm but what the... it was still 40 degrees, but the Dane was 90 cent richer due to lack of weather predictions by Mr. Liggins!

Photos has been uploaded take a look here.

16-01-06 Falls Creek
The coming weekend is devoted to a training camp at Falls Creek, which are a good ski resort in the winter time but perfect for running and hiking in the summer.

The machinery is still not up to date after the travelling but hopefully I'll be back in business after an easy week.

16-01-06 Hawai'i
After two awesome days on Oahu (Hawai'i) with beautiful beaches and mountain sceneries it was back to basic and work in Melbourne.

During the stay on Oahu, I managed one longer training (2:21) in the Tentalus & Makiki Valley, surrounded by green forest and water falls.

But it is the beaches there are spectacular especially at dusk here on the north shore

05-12-05 Zatopek Classic
10,000m in 32:52 (as per my highly skilled lap counter) which probably is my PB, so I can't be too disappointed with the time.

A lot of bad sign were showing up to the event ...
- I almost felt asleep during a internal training session at work
- Entered the race in the wrong category
- found out at 7 pm that I should have started at 5:30 by digging the envelope out of
the mail box with a fork, as I had forgot my keys at work!
- My cal
ves were soar due to around 10 hours of training Saturday to Tuesday
- My 'lucky' racing shoes had disappeared.... (to be found in the Key's car)
- Warm up time was limited to 5 minutes
- I was the only runner in the category so have to run by my self
- The time scheme at the wall, stated that 3:20 per K would give me at PB of 32 min over the 10 K, which
I  figured out was wrong on the first lap, even though I couldn't locate my calculator in my shorts' pocket

The fantastic support (which occupied half of the stand!) removed my worries from the wrong shoes rocky calf's, bad warm up etc. and without, I would probably still be out there trying to figure out how many more laps to go and how to break 32 in a 3:20 pace

And not at least, thanks to Mr. Key for the fantastic celebration party after the race.... it will take a long time to forget those Cigars!

NZ South Island Champs around Christchurch
Perfect weather nice terrain long and challenging courses....it nog getting better... That's the Good stuff!
After a late arrival 0:15 Saturday morning, the race was on.
Saturday Woodend Beach 16.8 k with 50 controls a'la old punching card style in challenging sand dune terrain. Running time 2:12, and a 3'rd place behind Rob Jessup 2:02 and Chris Forne 2:07. The day was complete with a swim in the ocean and a traditional Barbie back yard party.

Sunday  Dalethorpe 11k in alpine like terrain with open grassland and marches. Spend 1:51 in the forest as one control was missing and I did fine tooth comp for 20 min before I headed of to catch a flight back home to Ozi-land.

Maps and results to be online shortly

15-11-2005 Tour to NZ
The Coming weekend (19-20 November 2005) is going to be spend in NZ for the NZ South Island Champs (Classic 17.5 k and 'middle' 10 k) a part of the NZ super series. The terrain is Sand dunes and alpine like terrain around Christchurch! What a ripper!

With a new set of fastest times on the terrain intervals loop today and no snake encounters, it's looking good for the weekend in NZ.

13-11-2005 The Olympic Dream!

The Herald Sun Olympic Dream Fun Run with more than 5000 competitors is a 10k or 6.5k around the Botanic Garden in Melbourne. The weather was perfect, around 20 degrees at the start at 9:00 am.
The goal was to go sub 33 minutes, and it went all after the plan in the beginning. But some valuable seconds were lost from 6-8k running uphill and even a good finish couldn't make of the time loss. So it ended with a disappointing 33:06 placed as no. 15. (a big improvement from last years 35:21 on the same route
).

15 RUNE OLSEN                      33:10    33:06  M 15

Other MFR runners (and related) in action were:
   49 WARREN KEY                  35:37    35:35  M 48
   77 JIM RUSSELL                    36:35    36:26  M 72

06-11-2005 Fun Race:
The new training season has started so what is better than testing the leg speed in a fun run and do some scenic runs. The Fun Run in Trentham was the aim (as it was in the middle of nowhere and no local guns would be able to shoot a fast time). It was an early start but not as early as the rumours (thanks Troysi, to hang out two hours in Trentham..... is a long time!). 10 k from the local pub in the middle of ..... nothing! were to be raced. A course with a few smaller hills and a head / tail wind most of the way. A new Race record was set by the Dane 33.34 not a fantastic time but okay after the conditions. It included a place on the hall of fame board and $80 straight into the pocket.

The rest of the day I tried to get lost at Hanging rock without success!

01-11-2005 The Race there stops the Nation! - Nope it's not a orienteering race!
Nope it's not orienteering! but the annual horse race carnival in Melbourne. Everyone loves it, even if you don't like racing, as it's a national holyday in Victoria!

Yep here can we learn something in Denmark it's not that hard to find an opportunity to place some more holydays in the calendar.

With the change to summertime the new season is going. It started with a long run in the 'frying' sun and 28 degrees along the Yarra and didn't finish before the legs had been turning for 3 hours.

Maps from VIC Champs has been uploaded. Maps from NSW Champs and AUS Champs have been delayed due to, two weeks of har work in Brisbane.

16-10-05 Victorian Relay Champs
Time to forget the Aus Champs and look inside the state. MFR were more than favourite to take the title as it was the case last year, when the dashing Dane Broke the compass got lost and mispunched. My relay history in Australia is so far Vic relay 2004 =
mispunch & Aus Champs 2005 = Disaster, so it should be easy to improve. With out problems MFR (Melbourne Forest Racers) took the title in a nice open forest with heaps of tracks..... The Viking was feeling home!

Check out the Map and results here
02-10-2005 The Disaster!
The Relay was in the same terrain as the long race. The Victorian Nuggets looked good after two legs and I was ready to go out with a 45 second lead in front of the Canberra Cockatoos with Grant Bluet. But there were one minor problem my map was missing. Unfortunately The Victorian Nuggets W21 team were in the forest with the map. It took 7 min to find the right map, I lost the concentration and lost time on the first control as I memorised the wrong control code. All in all a miserable day!

Check out the Map and results here
01-10-2005 Australian Long Distance Championship
Were focused on delivering a good technical race and keep a high pace where possible. Had a good pace from the start and found a good flow, which gave me a 1½ min lead after 1/3 of the course. Control 12 should be crucial. The leg winner  did 26 seconds I lost almost 5 min!
I managed to speed up again but lost time on control 15 and some to defensive route choices.
But on the way to control 18 I lost the concentration and were navigating towards control 19 and lost another 5 min and the silver! Bugger it ended with a disappointing 5'th place

30-09-2005 Australian Sprint Champion!
After some miserable runs due to lack of concentration and focus on navigation, the Australian Sprint Championship in St. Helen was different.

After a good start with high speed on a 'easy' navigation course the only time loss was due to that I ran past a control without punching. Lost 15 seconds but fortunately the run was good enough to win with a margin of 3 seconds to Grant Bluet and Eric Morris who shared the silver.

The Day before The Danish -
Hungarian expedition conquered the foggy Cradle Mountain was in a thrilling 3 hour long run. The only problem was the weather!

See the news article here
27-09-05 National League race Sandstone Valley:

A different landscape - open grass areas, vague fast open forest and a hint of granite!

Fu#!@d op the race on control 2, but maintained a decent speed the rest of the way, but a defensive DK route choice and some navigation slack => another poor performance.

Time for sightseeing! That's what I'm good at:

Freycinet National Park - East Tassie - The view of Wine Glass Bay!

25-09-05 Tasmania it is!
Nice forest great sceneries and green like Scandinavia.

Tasmanian Long Champs Pittwater Dunes:
Danish fast running sand dune style forest, was on the menu. After a decent run the first ½ of the course the Viking lost the sight of the controls in the open areas, as he relied too much on the small  patches of forest in the open => Navigated worse than Columbus in 1492!

So the plan was to check out some nice sceneries around Hobart instead!

I was much more successful in this field!

25-28/03 2005 Easter Jindabyne NSW i 943 meters højde.

Day 1

Day 2

Day 3

06/03-05 Fødselsdag i F1'ens tegn

26/02-05 VIC Middle distance Championships - Slaty Creek

Se Ruten her.
20/02-05 MT. Macedon endeligt nedlagt!

18/02-05 Bakketur Lysterfield National Park

Tilbage i Kampen!

Sprint i Auckland (uni)
Day 1 i junglen 45 min nord for Auckland
Day 2 i junglen 45 min nord for Auckland

New Zealand
